Tech Talk / Re: Data Recovery - Any Questions?
« on: March 16, 2018, 02:32:54 AM »
Got it. Thanks! Was using Dropbox so that files instantly get uploaded in case my computer goes. Then I manually backed up to the external hard drive. Then used Dropbox's selective sync option to free memory on computer - ended up with the files on dropbox and the hard drive.
would love a simpler and more reliable backup solution.

mostly use for RAW files that are periodically imported to lightroom and photoshop for editing - hard to do that from web portal. that's why I'm looking for a new solution, any ideas welcome...
I would need to more fully understand your workflow to give specific advice. If I'm located in your town, you'll see my number in the phone book, I'll be glad to set an appointment.

If we're in different towns, contact a reputable IT business, they should be able to help you.

are those less fragile? I need at least 1TB
Less susceptible to vibration, but anything inserted and removed from computers constantly can break.

When it's a USB cable, those are easy to replace. When the USB connector is part of the device (flash key), or the device itself is inserted (i.e. SD card) those are done - and very expensive to do data retrieval on.

You said that the files are in Dropbox. Can't you just access them from the web portal? Why drag around a physical device?

3rd external hard drive in 2 years just died  :-\
my external hard drives do get a lot of use, are carried around a lot, etc
I have everything backed up to dropbox as well but its easier to access my files from a hard drive when I can just plug in (for example, to edit old pictures) as opposed to having to download from dropbox
so - do I just order another one or is there a better solution?
Dropbox isn't backup, it's a sync solution.

If your computer gets a virus, Dropbox will be glad to spread to other computers for you.

If you mistakenly delete a file on one computer, Dropbox will gladly delete it off all linked computers.

Backup software will backup all files spread through a computer, Dropbox needs all files placed into it's directory.

And so on...

Was asking about computers and your telling me about cars....
My name is CompuMedic, as in computers.

If you would have searched, you'll see that the referral I pointed you to was in response to the following question:

Where  can I go to get a repair estimate for a broken laptop for amex. I don't necessarily mind if the quote is very high   ;)

I've helped several people with this, and I'll be glad to help you too.

Yo, read my question again.....
Do the search, you'll find, "
I went to Compumedic.  (732) 278-8982

He charged to give me an estimate (which amex reimbursed)- and when Amex agreed to pay for the repair he fixed it.

Thanks Amex!!

I've helped others in precisely the same situation. (I've tried to quote a previous post in this thread, but even if it doesn't show up, you can search the thread for "Compumedic".)

Edit: Changed link to correct post. I hope...

can I ask how much it was ? he wants $300 sounds like a lot
Might I ask what your "sounds like a lot" is based on? Did you Google the part cost? How much the other equipment costs? How much time it takes? How much skill?

I spent five minutes googling the above and I think $300 is a very good price. You can also price compare at Staples (at least some stores offer screen replacement).

In my business, "it sounds like a lot" is typically "I have no idea about any of the above, I just want it cheaper".
