Arab and Muslim countries
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:10:19 AM »
Curious which hostile countries Jewish  people have been to, and what their experiences were. Also did bringing teffilin etc create problems. I personally was in Cairo and Petra Jordan and found them both to be a lot of fun. No one checked any of our bags so we were good on the teffilin.

The only places that would be problematic are Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and possibly Kuwait.

Sudan would prob be same story. Question is what would happen if you went to say Pakistan and kept a low profile. These guys don't know a thing about Jewish looks etc. I also wonder how these French Jews went to Iran to the kevarim of mordechai and Esther.

Not sure about Niger and Libya at the moment but Pakistan, Afghanistan and definitely Algeria are no issues with Teffilin etc. I have a friend who goes back to Pakistan and Afghanistan monthly with tefillin and lots of kosher food and has never had an issue as the people there have no clue what Jews even are.

With regards to Algeria, there are lots of French and Israeli Jews who visit there every year for a Yartzeit (Hillula).

Then they are mad.

If you saw the food and wine that they had there you'd be on the next flight...... I doubt that they even made it to the Kever

In Algiers itself its very dangerous.
According to the US gov travel advisory (quoted below) the countryside outside of Algiers in the eastern region is the main place to worry about. Not as much in the city, though not reccomended.

"Terrorism continues to pose a threat to the safety and security of U.S. citizens traveling to Algeria. Terrorist activities, including bombings, false roadblocks, kidnappings, ambushes, and assassinations occur regularly, particularly in the Kabylie region east of Algiers."
