For those who want to churn and/or want to get the bonus without paying the annual fee: Wait until the A/F gets charged, pay it off with the rest of the bill, and the sign-up bonus will post (at the end of that billing cycle). Then call to close the account and ask to be refunded. They can't charge an A/F for a card you aren't using. You will not lose the miles once they are in your US Airways account.

It seems that if after you use the card you just let it sit unused for a couple months, they will then email you with a targeted offer for 15,000 more points for spending $750 a month for three months.

Just got it waived on my card and my wife did on her first about s month ago. The first rep will say no but if you mention you want to close it they should get you to the retention department. Chat up how you like the relationship with Barclays buts it's exactly the same as Citi and your fee was waived with them etc. worked like a charm for me.

I'm on the phone with Barclays now. This guy just waived the $89 fee. Gave me 5000 miles if I spend $1000 in the next 90 days and put an extra 500 miles in the account just cause I said I like Barclays over citi! It was kind of funny.

My annual fee is charged on 1/29. I called multiple times to ask about closing the account and no one has offered a fee waiver. They haven't even mentioned transferring me to retention. Do I have to actually say I want to go through with cancelling the card to receive such an offer? What tips do you have for getting them to offer an AF waiver?

I currently have an offer for 15,000 miles if I spend $500 each in Jan, Feb, and Mar. If I have to cancel the card can I wait until 60 days after fee was charged and still get this promo (my billing cycle ends on the 21st so I can spend $500 in March before the 21st, have the statement post and then cancel, still within 60 days of Jan 29)?

HUCA. People have been having a pretty easy time. Tell them you have Citi AA too and don't see the benefit of having both.

Ask to speak to an "account specialist" the relationship manager's that answer the phone cant waive fees.

Should I ask the relationship manager about waiving the fee and when he says he can't help, ask to speak to an "account specialist" or do I just ask to speak to specialist without giving a reason?

Either. If you ask about waiving the fee some relationship managers will tell you even a supervisor can't help, just ask to be transferred anyways.

Nope. But you can tell Citi that you have the Barclays card and vice versa and get both AFs waived.

I am talking about a bonus for spending $500 a month for 3 months that they sometimes have (possibly around the same time as the AF posts).

I tried yesterday with citi. They would not budge. Sobi changed it to the double cash card.

Those sometimes take a bit longer.
