For those who want to churn and/or want to get the bonus without paying the annual fee: Wait until the A/F gets charged, pay it off with the rest of the bill, and the sign-up bonus will post (at the end of that billing cycle). Then call to close the account and ask to be refunded. They can't charge an A/F for a card you aren't using. You will not lose the miles once they are in your US Airways account.

It seems that if after you use the card you just let it sit unused for a couple months, they will then email you with a targeted offer for 15,000 more points for spending $750 a month for three months.

How long, approximately?
I've had it take 2 billing cycles after promotion ended.

Ok, thanks.
I guess that won't help to cancel and avoid the AF.
BTW, I was able to get the AF waived by speaking to an account specialist (thank you voldemort) so I don't care as much when the miles post.

My wife got this offer for October, November, December. Her miles show up on Barclays as earned but will prob post after this Jan-February statement closes. So pretty quick.

Nope. But you can tell Citi that you have the Barclays card and vice versa and get both AFs waived.
You can probably do so without actually having it. No?

Sure. I was just saying that it's possible to get both AFs waived.

It shouldn't. The free bags come from your AAdvantage number. By me, it was updated right away that I was no longer a card holder.

You can now sign up for the Barclays aviator card (red) in flight.

If you still have the aviator card from the US airways card can you get this card or first have to close the Aviator card .....?

Was really hoping it would be a much higher number of miles to attract new customers away from citi.

Maybe the other versions will have higher amounts!

YMMV - My DW was able to get to US Airways cards (and get bonuses) which both converted to Aviator cards.

ETA - Just applied and was approved. Currently have one open (converted from US Airways); has been open for 2 years.

40K with no spend is pretty solid.

Exactly.  40K for any initial purchase is about as good as it gets in this game.

You'd prefer 50k after 3k spend like Citi ?

The AF on this card is pretty easy to get waived.

Yes, I would prefer 60k + waived first year annual fee for 3k spend!

This is a solid offer for churners, and easy 40k miles but I was hoping for something that would really compete for citi customers with something stronger than what citi offers, especially since they have much tougher options for signing up new card members compared to Citi.

Except AA's goal wasn't to have Citi and Barclays competing.

Not sure AA cares too much - they're getting paid by the banks to "sell" miles.
