As I don't currently live in the USA, I don't carry liability auto coverage...so when I rent a car next month in NYC I will put it on my Amex plat so I have CDW....

What do I do about liability? I could buy it from Hertz but it's like $15 per day...is there a cheaper alternative?

from what i understand basic liability is included in every rental in most states bec. it is illegal to drive without it the liability that hertz is selling is extra liability (either personal or above the legal min.)

How do we verify this? Is this the case even if you decline the CDW and opt for the Amex Plat coverage?

yes i live in the tristate area but dont have a car, and therefore no car insurance but my ink mc covered around 8k in damages once

ok, but what happens if g-d forbid there is a lawsuit...does one have any personal liability from hertz or amex?

if one buys the supp. insurance from hertz for $13 per day does it cancel the amex cdw coverage?

Only from Hertz aprox 10K. Buying Liability from Hertz won`t cancel your Collision insurance from your cc as they cover different things.

Who covered the other damages-if there were, e.g. to your car, to people etc.?

mc covered my car that's all i ever saw the bill for

Interesting. I thought CC only cover add to liability, I did not know they cover your own car as well.

Spoke with Hertz at JFK....no liability coverage is inlcuded whatsoever...neither does Amex provide any....if you don't have private auto coverage and want to have liability - which is more than a good idea - you must buy it for $12.95 a day....I think better safe than sorry...

They r mandated to include minimum liability, (in N.Y. It's 10,000). which is not nearly enough if there is a lawsuit and you don't have personal insurance,

Correct...never realized this...seems like i will need to purchase this every time I rent in the USA 'til I get my own insurance coverage

Is there an alternative?
