Infant On Reward Ticket Master Thread
« on: December 25, 2011, 03:22:50 PM »
Update: See reply #10 for a list of updated policies.

I would like to start a thread on infant charges (on lap) for reward tickets.

Airline (booked with):
reward class (first,business,coach):
infant charge:

(I know there are threads that mention this but no clear thread going through each airline)

How about a wiki. And I think that most airlines charge 10% on intl, so the question really is where the exceptions are to be found. I really don't see a MT candidate here.

Although many airlines charge 10% many airlines don't.

Its very beneficial to know which airline charges what to know with who to book with.

A one-way business ticket fro lax-tlv or tlv-nyc could range from $100-$500 depending on the airline.

We know what continental charges, but what about the smaller or european airlines like Austrian or LOT......

I stand to be corrected, what does everyone think?

So you'd fly an inferior business/first class, possibly with an extra connection, just to save a few hundred on the infant ticket?

If you want a list seatguru has a tab for infants for every airline, check it out. You will notice that virtually every airline (with a few exceptions) charge 10% plus taxes.

BY LH (seat guru) it says:    " a child under 2 years old (24 months) is usually charged a discounted fare plus taxes, even if the infant will be on the lap of another passenger for the flight"

What does that mean?

Seat guru doesn't even discuss brussels air!

If I need to make a stop anyway (which is what happens trying to book w/ miles)
then why not save $400?

You need to be logged in to BA to see this link
Quote
13.3. Infants (less than 2 years of age) travelling with a Member on a flight Reward will travel for ten percent of the Avios Points required for the Member's flight Reward if they do not have their own seat. Children (2 years of age or older) and infants who require their own seat will be "charged" the full Avios Points for the relevant destination.

It has to do with the ticketing carrier, not the operating carrier.
Most airlines (including AA, CO, DL, UA, US, and IcelandAir) charge 10% of the full fare for adding an infant.

Culling from FT threads which may/may not be up to date, here is a list of exceptions:
Air Canada ($50 Y, $100 J, $125 F flat fee)
BA (10% of the miles)
BMI (taxes)
Finnair (taxes)
Lufthansa (taxes)
SAS (taxes)
Qantas (free)

I had lufthansa agents adding a infant for free and others charge 10%. Most charge, so be happy if not, but be expected to get charged. On my next trip i booked my familys tickets with us and mine with aeroplan, as us charges 10% of full fare and aeroplan charged some more miles, but a flat 100 dollars. If your ticket involves alot of stops and airlines and can price for 10k+ so a infant can cost alot, depending on issuing carrier

Us Air wanted 10% (flying on Continental) which was close to $1500 on a FC trip to Europe

If I wait until I get to the airport the carrier won't charge me then?
(example: an AC operated flight in business ,booked with CO )

Looks like Delta and AA are also 10%.

So is AC the only exception that offers flat fare?

Seems like airlines that charge you fuel surcharges give you a break on infant tickets;)

I booked a ticket with BA miles on AA from JFK - LAX and BA wanted 10% of the miles, so I booked the tickets without the infants and later called AA and added the infants for free.

Of course they added them for free, that's a domestic flight.  They don't even need a ticket.
