Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

Question: I enrolled into a health insurance plan, which I knew I would only need for a few months. Now, it would not be ethical to enroll, plan to wait and see if I need any services, and then (if it turns out I didn't need it) just not pay and allow the insurance to be terminated.

What happened to me is that they screwed up the billing. I paid for the first month, but they decided to run a billing cycle starting from the 15th of the month - combined with the fact that I started in December, that raised my premium for what they called "the first month," since now it was half a month in 2017 and half in 2018.

I paid the additional amount, but they kept sending me bills that did not include that payment, and were more than I should be paying.

Numerous calls asking them to fix the issue and send me an accurate bill, back and forth...by the time they finally sent a correct bill, they had terminated my insurance due to lack of payment - when the reason it wasn't paid was because they hadn't sent an accurate bill!

Ethically/morally speaking, should I pay the premiums? I believe they cancel the coverage retroactively, but still...
I asked a Rabbi about doing this purposely, meaning to sign up, fall behind in premium payments and if you don't have any claims let it terminate. He said it's fine, rules are rules and that's the deal you signed up for.
He's a pretty straight guy I was surprised with his response.

When people buy used cars they usually want to get a prepurchase inspection done by a mechanic. If a potential buyer paid for one and then decided not to buy the car. Can the seller ask the mechanic for the report?

I don't see an issue.

It's similar to  a home inspection being done for a buyer who decides not to buy the property.  If the almost-buyer gave the real estate agent a copy of the report, I'm sure the agent would give it to other serous shoppers of the property.

Many inspectors will write in the report who they did the inspection for, although I suppose that can be changed pretty easily.

Why is the report any less valid if it says on top "Prepared for as2".  I can still use the information to evaluate the car or home I want to buy.  Or the agent can redact that information, to protect the privacy of the previous shopper.

You have no recourse.

Not any less valid, just less professional.

You have no recourse.
Which means that the next buyer can now decide if he is willing to pay to have this recourse.

Most likely it would have to be inspected again.

I don't see why.
The roof that was in good condition didn't start needing to be replaced in the last few weeks/ months since the inspector came.

What if structural damage is found? Who will you have recourse against?

Do you have any recourse against the inspector if it was done for you? I don't think they guarantee their work.

Bought a salsa in walmart, but realized it's the wrong flavor after I brought it home, back in walmart today and long line at CS, can I just exchange the flavors without asking or telling anyone?
Eta, at the self checkout asked the guy, Np. No need to wait for cs.

My home inspection that I had done states clearly on the top that it is only for me, and cannot be sold or shared with any other party. I think that these clauses may vary by state.

With the intention that even if it's junk and the store won't take it back, you will use Amex RP? That's exactly what the benefit is for. But if if you want to MS that way? That doesn't sound right to me.
