what to do with the miles from a cc account that one wants to close???

I am a "Dans Deals" novice and need advice urgently.  My mother-in-law has a lot of mileage on her AA citibank cc. They just called her that they are raising the APR. She wants to get rid of the card and find a better one, but she claims that Citi told her that if she closes out the account, she will forfit her miles. Can this be true? What options are there to transfer the miles and do so quickly? Please advise.

 The only way your MIL has alot of miles on her CITI AA CC is if she charged alot since her last statement. Once a statement closes the miles are transferred over to AA and are out of bounds for CITI to do anyting

 Now if she pays it off in full every month why should she care if they raise her APR to 1000%

 The best thing to do is wait till the present period closes and Citi transfers the miles from the present spending over to AA. if she really wants to CX the CC then she shouldn use it any longer. But dont tell that to CITI till the miles all post from the new spending. Then she should call up and CX the CC

Or r u maybe refering to the bonus signup miles which only post after a while that they can hold it back ? Other wise steve2 is right

It's just a scare tactic, you will only lose the miles for purchases made that month since the last billing statement.

Often they will offer you bonus miles in exchange for keeping the account open and you can still go ahead and close it once the bonus miles post if you so desire...
