Local and/or state laws regarding car seats and child restraint systems (booster seats).

New York's Occupant Restraint laws require the following:

  • Children up to the age of 4 must be properly restrained in a federally approved child safety seat that is attached to a vehicle by a seat belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system.
  • Children less than age 4 but weighing more than 40 poundsmay be restrained in a booster seat with a lap/shoulder safety belt. However, a child safety seat that accommodates higher weights can be used.
  • Children ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 must be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system, one for which the child meets the height and weight recommendations of the child restraint manufacturer.*
  • An appropriate child restraint system is one that meets the child's size and weight recommended by the manufacturer.
  • A vehicle's safety belt is NOT a child restraint system.
  • Children riding in booster seats must be secured with a combination lap/shoulder seat belt, NEVER secure a child in a booster seat with only a lap belt.
  • From the age of 8 until they reach their 16th birthday, children must be restrained in a seat belt whenever they ride in a vehicle. All Front seat passengers must be properly restrained at all times, regardless of age.
  • Children 12 years and younger should ride in the back seat. By simply buckling up your child in the back seat reduces his/her risk of death by 33%.

*It is recommended that booster seats be used until your child is 4 foot 9 inches tall or weighs 100 pounds.[/li][/list]

New Jersey law going into effect 9/1/2015

Meh.  I've heard better.
Still too convenient to be able to transfer Rafi while he's sleeping from car to stroller...can't ever imagine not wanting to do so until he grows out of it.
Ya, I remember those days... Anyways, can you help us all find the piece that YOU would buy if you were in our situation? 18 months..Convertible...

Don't think you'll go too wrong with any of these:

www.amazon.com/dp/B005UBCHEG/?tag=cl03f-20

YOU would buy one of those? That's all the research you did?... Bulky for all the flying that you do, no?

I didn't do any research yet.  I took a quick look at CR ratings and Amazon reviews and gave you a few suggestions.
Sorry I tried.

Anyone have anything to say FOR or AGAINST this one?
Looks light, not so bulky to fly with, comfortable and reviews are 4 stars, price is good too.

It's only good for up to 40 pounds.  I'd get one that lasts longer.
See reply #3 for CR rankings of it.

Thanks.
Do you rely on CR more than Amazon ratings?
How do you read those red and black circles on the right on CR?
Is that screenshot that of the very best carseats or is that somewhere in the middle of the list?

eh, unless I'm misremembering things, by the time they reach 40lbs they should be about ready to move on to a booster seat...
EDIT: apparently I misremembered. :)

I have (an older version of) this one that i currently use as a booster seat. I've had it ever since my oldest grew out of his infant seat. The biggest problem with that is that it's really big and bulky. It's not really an issue now but when I had a smaller car it was annoying --especially when using it rear-facing.

I also have a Britax Roundabout 40 that my 18 month old currently uses. it's smaller, lighter and easier to use than the other one. This is the previous generation with a 40lb limit, the new ones have a 55lb limit.

Replies 3, 7, and 10 have the ratings.
CR actually tests them in crashes, etc, but they aren't using them as parents.  Thus you need to combine what they say with Amazon ratings.

I haven't done the research yet, but why not just get something like this that works for 20-100 pounds once you're done with an infant seat?

1.

2. Now that I think about it I think I was wrong about the 40lb thing, I think when my son hit 40 I moved him to the bigger one (which I converted to a booster at about 50lbs).

EDIT: I'm not sure I'm being very clear here, I'll write up an explanation...

IIRC this is what happened:

When my oldest grew out of his infant seat we got the alpha omega thing.
when my second grew out of the infant seat my oldest was still in the car seat so we needed a second one, We didn't want another big bulky one so we got the Britax. By the time my second grew out of the Britax my oldest was already in a booster (or maybe ready to move to a booster?) so my oldest starting using  a small, backless booster and my second started using the big one (as a carseat) until about 50lbs when we converted it to a booster.

Hopefully that makes things clearer, not more complicated :)

We have this one in the akane color (was cheaper when we bought it) and we are very happy with it.
