Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk
  • Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Lake Powell (popular lake for boating, with kayak, motor boat, pontoon boat, houseboat rentals, Jetski, boat tours, and swimming). Lake and surrounding canyon walls are uniquely scenic together (it's actually a huge artificial reservoir surrounded by canyon walls, resulting from the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam

Depending on where you are going in the grand canyon (North Rim / South Rim) - Day 2 is lot of driving.

Planning a 4 day trip...input would be great!
Day 1 flying into Las vegas
Day 2 driving to grand canyon sleeping in sedona
day 3 sedona with possibility of sleeping in phoniex
day 4 phoinex/vegas

do i need a full day at grand canyon or can i do that and sedona in a day?
is phoinex a waste?
is there kosher food @ or near grancanyon

thanx in advance for your help

Lake Powell & Zion Trip Report - Quick 4 day trip

Flew NYC straight to Lake Powell which is in Page,AZ
EWR-PHX-PGA

Returned from St George, UT, SGU-DEN-EWR on United miles

Ewr to Phx using United Miles
UR points to book Great Lakes Airlines PHX to PGA.
(Yes slight risk flying connecting on two separate itineraries, but Great Lakes has multiple flights per day)
(Flying AA would've required a terminal change)

Got into Phoenix about 8am and went to United Club which happened to be directly opposite Great Lakes gate.

Great Lakes is a tiny little plane 1-1 configuration, no cockpit, restroom etc

Got into page about 12 noon. It isn't simple to get a one way rental out of Page. There is only an Avis in Page which is a franchise. However Paul is very helpful in getting you into Corporate vehicles which need to get back to to the bigger airports regardless. (I'm not sure what would happen if you take a franchise vehicle and drop it off in PHX)
Avis is closed on Sunday but he left us the keys with the Airline. (Actually rented 2 days locally, and then 1 day on a one-way to $ave a couple bucks.)

Stayed at the Courtyard in Page which was very fair. Checked in early so took a room without great view rather then wait. There's a Walmart there and all.

Went to Horseshoe Bend. Gorgeous! Short easy but very sunny hike up to the viewpoint. Later in the afternoon walked down to The Chains. Thanks to ddfer who TR about this. It's basically a place to climb down into the Lake.

Monday: Took out a boat on Lake Powell. There are many other marinas to rent from other then the ones on the water. Google them. We booked late so we ended up with a pontoon from Carls Marina. Costs about 380 plus fuel but included delivery and haul out from the lake. Definitely easier to Beach a pontoon. Spent a full day riding around, parked on the beach, and we also hooked up a tube as well.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A DAY ON LAKE POWELL

TUES: Antelope Canyons in the morning. We didn't do the actual Antelope Canyons. We did the Canyon X, but supposedly its the same. It's a must do, yes those pix are real! Though the camera settings definitely help. Going in the morning is the way to go, avoids crowds and the sweltering heat.

Checked out and drove 1.5 hrs to Zion National Park. Thanks to another Ddf TR we biked it. There are other bike rental places in Springdale, but it's a lot easier to rent from the location at the entrance to the park as it's not significantly more expensive. We started biking down about 1.5 hrs b4 sundown. Weather was amazing and the sights even more amazing the road is so quiet and serene. Definitely an unbelievable way to experience one of the best national parks.

Stayed at the Springhill Suites in Springdale. Pretty much brand new. The place could almost qualify as a Ritz. Got Gold upgraded to a Suite.

WED went back into zion for a quick hike. Headed out about noon to SGU Airport in St George, UT. Connected through DEN. Called in an order to East Side Kosher Deli in Denver and sent an Uber to fetch it, tx amex credits!

Short but unbelievable!

Looking for a vacation house for a weekend in December.

Some Specs it would need to have:

7+ bedrooms 4+ bathrooms
Clean
Walkable to a shul (less than 20 minutes)
Pool

It does not need to be kosher. The bigger the better.

Please let me know if any one has any suggestions on how to find such a place (specific rental that someone has used in the past, an exact area to search on VRBO, or a vacation company that can help).

TIA

grand canyon will be quite cool and phoenix can be very nice then but not always guaranteed. I went last year that time and the weather was beautiful. The week before I was there, I was told, was "frigid" ( on PHX standards of course).

I'll be at the Grand Canyon with the family next week. We have several young children, so hiking is out. We're traveling in from Flagstaff for a day trip. Can anyone recommend a route, listing the various places we should stop and have great views? Is the glass Skywalk worth the visit? Anything else we should do in the area?

kierland villas is about a 45 minute nice walk to shul, but they have kitchens etc and are pretty good value.

with young kids we really did basic main entrance area and a walk down to ice cream, took the train from flagstaff and back which the kids really enjoyed (and was easier for parking etc).

How old are your kids? Definitely hit the south rim grand canyon visitor's center and look at the view points (Mathis Point). If your kids are at least 4, they can do the junior ranger program and get a badge. There's also the Yavapai geology museum (nothing special, but it's a great spot for indoor viewing) and you can walk the rim trail (it's a paved path). You can also stop at the El Tovar and look at the beautfiul historic hotel.  I can't comment on the skywalk. You can walk a little into the canyon on the bright angel trail and then come back up. I took my 8 and 9 year olds this week and my younger kids totally could have done it.

In the Flagstaff area, there is a ton of things to do. We went to Sunset Crater National Park (and walked through lava fields), Wupatki National Park (saw pueblos), Meteor Crater, stopped at the corner in Winslow Arizona, went to Homolovi State Park....we wanted to get to the Painted Desert but didn't have time.  All the parks out there have plenty of room for kids to roam free.

I just came back from a vacation in Arizona and here are some of my comments:

Tucson: We spent a lot of time at Old Tucson. My kids loved it - it's an old studio for western movies and they have live performances all day long.  We also love Saguaro National Park .

Phoenix: Hole in the Rock is a really fun, quick hike with a great view.  The Desert Botanical Gardens is pricey and only ok. We also went to Pueblo Grande Museum which is small but a nice stop to learn a bit about Pueblos.

Sedona:
Pink Jeep Tours live up to their hype and price.
Palataki Ruins - great place to see cliff dwellings/cave drawings but you need a reservation during popular times

Flagstaff:

There's a new Residence Inn in Flagstaff that was a great place to stay. The staff was super friendly and accommodating, they had plenty of kosher breakfast options and the rooms are spacious. The prices were ridiculously cheap too ($88-93/night) for a double queen with pull out couch and kitchen (no oven, just convection microwave  and fridge). The pull out couch is small so if you want 6 people in your room, make sure they are small kids.

There are so many things to do in the area besides the Grand Canyon. Here's what we did:

See the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook
Homolovi State Park - walk to a pueblo ruin and hunt for pottery shards. You can walk anywhere in the structure but you can't take pottery. My kids had a blast digging around in the ruins. It's really peaceful and quiet.
Winslow Arizona - stand at the corner, see La Posada
Meteor Crater - it's a little expensive, but really interesting to see the huge crater formed by a meteor.
Sunset Crater National Park - you can hike (or drive) through lava fields from an old volcano. It was really unexpected!
Wupatki National park - lots of Pueblo ruins to see including ball courts. These are really accessible and don't require hiking if that's not your thing.
Lowell Observatory - great place, lots of interesting lectures and information on space. The best programs are in the evening. There really isn't anything for younger kids though. They have a really cheap family membership ($70 for 2 adults/4 kids)  which can be used at many other science centers.
Montezuman's Well - we stopped here on the way back to Phoenix. It was a nice stop - cliff dwellings with a watering hole. It's right off the highway too.

Looking for a recommendation for a SPG hotel to go to for 3-4 days in March. Going Just me and wife, no kids. Just looking to relax and nothing else. preferably a place with a nice pool and a place that we can basically stay on premises most of the time and chill. Also would be a big plus if near some kosher food and a shul.
Phoenician good? Canyon suites?
Any other good ones?

Stayed at the canyon suites summer '17, had an amazing time, perfect place just to relax... Relatively close to kosher food.

Westin Kierkand Villas are great for chilling and relaxing (that is basically all we do when we go to AZ) and close to the Scottsdale shul and restaurants. :)
