Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk
  • Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Lake Powell (popular lake for boating, with kayak, motor boat, pontoon boat, houseboat rentals, Jetski, boat tours, and swimming). Lake and surrounding canyon walls are uniquely scenic together (it's actually a huge artificial reservoir surrounded by canyon walls, resulting from the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam

I found brand new shirts. I just needed white shirts.
I did find a brand new pair of Hugo boss pants, just want my size.
You can find new or very slightly used merchandise, it's just hard.

Looking for a nice hotel in Scottsdale area, or close to PHX, with lots of pools, to just chill.

I see the Hyatt Regency is favored by alot of ddfr's, however i noticed they allow pets in the hotel...

Any other hotel suggestions?

The Phoenician. It's a Starwood property, haven't been there in like 5 years but IIRC it has like 9 pools.... Really great place, they had great service as well.

I stayed in the Flagstaff West Ramada. Paid $47/night/room. It's more like an inn/motel but it was very nice and clean.

Going to Scottsdale for a long Memorial Day weekend. Planning a trip to Sedona and The Grand Canyon for either Sunday or Sunday/Monday.

I need to decide on doing a single very long day trip on Sunday and getting everything in or doing Sedona on Sunday staying over in Flagstaff and doing Grand Canyon on Monday. We will be traveling with a 3 and 6 year old which limits what we can do at either place.

I wanted to get feedback from those who have done the trip and what you would suggest.

You could do it one day if you had to, but I would recommend two days.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards two days also but wanted some feedback from those with experience.

Just need to figure out what to do for the second day at the Grand Canyon since a lot of the more extreme things are out...

I recommend two days but could be done in one.  Out of africa was very good. My kids (1.5, 5, and 7) loved it. Make sure you chop a good schmooze with Al, the trolley driver. About 1/2 before the GC there is a small but enjoyable airplane museum which is a good stop to stretch your legs (30 minutes or so).
One thing that you should note is that you can not walk into just any store and get kosher products. We stayed overnight in Flagstaff and took along  vacuum packed deli. Planned on getting bread from the local Walmart. But none of the bread had a hechsher (even the great value brand which does have a hechsher on the east coast). Finally I found one brand that was good, I think it was Bambino or something. But you really have to look for it.

I was there in January, I drove out from LA.
I got the GC for sunrise then spent most of day there planning on going to Sedona for sunset.
As it turned out, I made a mistake on the timing and thought I had an hour more than I actually did, so once I realized I wouldn't make it to Sedona i just stayed at the GC.

1. Someone CMIIW, but I'm thinking now that a full day at the GC this time of year might possibly be a bit much.
When I went I spent a nice chunk of the day taking the trail to ooh-ah point, something (hiking in the GC anytime other than early morning/evening) which is probably not a good idea this time of year. (unless it hasn't gotten really hot yet?)

I highly recommend driving the 89a from Flagstaff to Sedona close to sunset, I did that on another trip and it's absolutely stunning.
