Think of Moving?

Airports:
  • CLE is about 15 minutes from downtown and 25-30 minutes from the Jewish community.  It's a focus city for Frontier, Spirit, and United.
  • The RTA (Rapid transit train) at Brookpark station has free parking and is just 1 train stop (3 minutes) to the stop inside the airport. The train costs $2.50 and the schedule is here: http://www.riderta.com/routes/redline/schedules/current#WestboundWeekday
An uber from Brookpark station to CLE is about $10.
  • Uber between the Jewish community and CLE is about $30.
  • CLE off-site parking is about $9/day, on-site parking is $17-$22/day, and curbside valet parking is $35/day.
  • CAK is ~40 minutes from the Jewish community and located nearby the NFL Hall of Fame.
  • Uber between the Jewish community and CAK is about $45.

  • The nicest hotel in Cleveland is like the Ritz-Carlton downtown. Marriott's Metropolitan at The 9 is also highly regarded, with a bar in an old vault. There is also a Hilton, Westin, and Kimpton downtown.

Transportation:
  • There is a subway/light rail connecting the airport with downtown, University Circle (where the Case campus and many museums are) and the Jewish community area, but renting a car is pretty much required unless you are just going between the airport and downtown.

So probably more convenient and cheaper to take Uber?

Differences between Beachwood and University Heights, aside from the latter having voucher and former not?

The mega shuls (5 and counting) are all clustered together on the UH/Beachwood border. 4 are on the Beachwood side, which means not having to cross a major street to get to shul.

Both cities have free busing to all 3 of the frum schools.

UH Pros:
-Kids get school voucher (currently $4,650 for K-8 ad $6,000 for high school) regardless of income. If you make below a threshold the school must accept the voucher as payment in full, otherwise you'll still have the pay the difference.
-Cheaper housing

UH Cons:
-4.1% property tax.
-2.5% income tax. Only a 1% credit if you work outside of UH, so if you work in CLE you'll pay CLE 2.5% and UH 1.5%. If you work in Beachwood you'll pay Beachwood 2% and UH 1.5%.
-Garbage is weight limited and many items can't be thrown away.
-Failing public school district means that there is a limited market for home sales, though frum Jews are moving in at unprecedented rates which have reduced the time that houses are on the market.
-Houses are closer together.
-Point of sale inspection required for home sales.

Beachwood Pros:
-2% income tax and full credit if you work outside Beachwood, so if you work in CLE you'll pay CLE 2.5% and owe Beachwood nothing. If you work in Beachwood you'll pay Beachwood 2%.
-1.9% property tax.
-Excellent street snowplowing
-Sidewalk snowplowing
-On-demand garbage pickup available. Anything can be thrown away.
-Your house will sell very quickly, often before it even hits the market.
-One of the best public school districts in the state, making for a broad home selling market.
-Houses are more spread apart.
-No point of sale inspection required for home sales.
-Very fast and high-tech EMS/Fire response.

Beachwood cons:
-No school voucher
-Pricier houses

Might be forgetting a few more stuff, but that's the gist of it.

Excellent rundown. Thanks.

Gotta run the math if the vouchers exceed increased property and income tax.

True. Especially since vouchers only help while you have kids in school, but property taxes you have to pay regardless
