Southwest Companion Pass.

What is it:

The SW CP is arguably the most valuable airline perk available today. It allows you to bring a companion with you for free on any Southwest flight, regardless of whether you are on a revenue or award ticket. All you pay are the government taxes on the ticket. The pass works for all Southwest flights, including international flights. The pass also works on Airtran flights that are sold on Southwest.com. Airtran flights that are not sold on Southwest.com are not eligible.
Like all other Southwest award bookings, the CP is not subject to any capacity controls, and as long as there is still a seat for sale on a particular flight, it is yours.
The pass is valid for the year it is earned in and the entire next calendar year. If you earned your CP in July 2014, your pass will be valid for the remainder of 2014 and the entirety of 2015.

How to get it:

The SW CP is obtained by earning 125,000 Southwest points in one calendar year. For example, if you earned 8k points by flying at the beginning of 2014, you need to earn another 117k points throughout the rest of 2014 in order to qualify for CP. Once 2015 rolls around, the points you've earned in 2014 no longer qualify for earning your CP, although they will still be redeemable points.

The primary method of accumulating Southwest points is CC signup bonuses. The Southwest CC frequently offers 50k point signup bonuses on all 4 flavors of Southwest cards and signup bonuses count towards earning the CP. Get approved for 2 of these cards, meet the 2k spending requirement on each and you are only 21k points away from the CP.

All points earned through the Rapid Rewards shopping mall also count towards SW CP eligibility.
Points transferred from Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, and Wyndham all count towards CP status.
Points transferred from Ultimate Rewards do not count towards CP, although you can transfer can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.

Points earned by crediting hotel stays and car rentals to Southwest also count towards CP.

Using the CP:

Using your CP is very simple. Once you book a flight on Southwest, an "Add a companion" button will appear under your reservation. Just fill out the info and pay the taxes and you are done.
It is best to add your companion right when you book your own flight as there have been instances where people have forgotten to add their companion, the flight subsequently sold out and they were not able to add their companion. One thing to keep in mind is that online changes with a companion booked are not possible, you need to cancel the companion, wait 10-15 min, make the change and then add the companion again. You can make the necessary changes over the phone though.
You can change your companion up to 3 times during the life of your CP. (I believe you can change it 3 times per calendar year.)

I hear your point. Someone's gotta be the guinea pig :D
If I could avoid risking 50k miles to do so I'd prefer that. Anyone know what happens if I merge my old account (that has a companion pass active with it) onto the new one?

On 12/16, I  received the SW companion pass for reaching the 110k after  my December billing cycle closed on 11th. I purchased VR  on 12/14, and the miles and companion pass was issues on 12/16.
I called Southwest and the woman had never seen  miles posting prior to the end of the billing cycle.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Any suggestions to get the miles and status posted in 2014?

yes, mine posted prior to completion of billing cycle
Also, I think that they merged my 2 SW accounts for me automatically and emailed me the Companion Pass info

I'm trying it out. Wish I'd had seen these other reports if early bonus point postings. I would have held off until the New Year. I thought they wait until the statement closes!

not sure how easy it is for you to get VRs but if u do it all in Card #2 in 2 days, and the next batch posts as quickly as these already did,
then do you think that you'll have all 110K posted by dec 31?

My statement is going to post on December 28th. With this statement, I will then have about 111,000 points in my southwest account. I want to try to get the Companian Pass starting in January2014 so I can basicallly get it for 2 years.

Can I change my statement to close in January? What/how can I prevent from posting in December?

This doesn't answer your question(s) but just to point out you won't get the cp unless/until ALL 110K post in the same calendar year.

I also got an email, but it was targeted (it came with my name already printed out - unchangeable). I tried fiddling with the URL but to no avail.

Dan, main site:
Quote
you can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.
But on Hyatt site is says, 50k Hyatt = 25k SW, did this recently change or am i missing something?
And, can I transfer from my Hyatt to friends SW, or names need to match?

When you convert 50,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points to Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards points, you will receive 24,000 points plus a 6,000 point bonus for a total of 30,000 Rapid Rewards points.

I don't think names have to match.
Not instant but it will be backdated to date of transfer.

Is this (that the points backdate) in the RR T&C, or from experience? We transferred the balance from Hyatt to get Companion Pass before year end (since 104K points had already posted earlier this year) and at least get CP for whole of 2014.
We're hoping to book a ticket to fly late Jan, but the question is when will the points actually post so we can actually go ahead with the booking. Is there any way to expedite?
We're in a situation where we 'technically' have the CP for 2014, but can't use it yet.

That's what people have posted in the past.  Works the same way with SPG.
I have no experience though with Hyatt and make no guarantees.

Why can't you book one ticket and add the companion when your pass becomes active?
