Not in my experience, just have yourself added as an additional guest on the reservation. I told them that my colleague may or may not join, they didn't seem to care that he never showed up.

It seems that they are unwilling (they claim unable) to open award nights. But nights do open when ppl cancel reservations

very. Annoying trying to look for availability for succos and not one standard room for second days all the travel agents hold the rooms till the last second and then let go of them two days before if they can't book it

I have 5 nights booked over 4 separate reservations; 2 nights with certs for superior accessible room, 2 nights with points & 1 night with points and cash all for the standard superior room.

Is it possible to combine the reservations into 1 reservation and get the 5th night free?

I called Hilton Honors today and they told me it's not possible and it can only be done if booked in 1 reservation, then the system will automatically apply the free night. I spoke to a supervisor who insisted she tired everything and there's no way to do it manually. She said maybe if somehow the hotel agreed to combine the reservations into 1 then it may work.
