even if the fare was $99 1 way after taxes etc the tkt would $225 or so. VX recently had it to that level, but Id doubt they would have it that low in the Spring. plus keep in mind most carriers charge for checking a bag unless you are an Elite with them. So thats another $30 for 1 bag r/t. so now you are over $250

as for your 1st idea, well just apply for 1 of any Carriers CC that has at least 25k as the min bonus and spend the min in order to get it

then pray that when the Miles make it into your acct, theres a Saver award that can be claimed

also when does Eas fall out this year, since thats a time everyone is flying and less chance of getting a free tkt. In the other world its called Spring Break time

good luck you are gonna need it

I saw just before that UA has a $198+ fare JFK-LAX at least in Jan since I didnt know your dates I could check it.

Im a 1k so I dont know what UA charges per bag, I think its $15 for the 1st if you pay online or $20 or $25 at the airport, there is also a 2nd bag fee I have no idea what that is

If $198+ is too much $$$ what are you going to do once out there Walk everywhere gas is over $3 a gal car rentals are the most in LA that I have seen them in yrs upon yrs

the best carrier card is any that 1-will give you enough miles for a free tkt, 2- one where the Carrier is showing Saver Pass tkts being available. 3- any where they will actually issue you a CC, and from the looks of things you seem to be a very bad credit risk if $198+ is alot of $$ for You, sorry to say. Good Luck

Is florida cheaper

1stly I dont mean to come over as harsh

any place where Spring Break is a Thing will be expensive and I havent checked but I think since Pesach comes out very early this yr you will be running up against College Spring Break

The tkts to FL might be cheaper but I highly doubt youd find tkts to anywhere for say $100, gas is expensive all over and Hotels will be in demand as well. which means cars will be expensive as well

eg Im flying into Cali in 2 weeks I wanted LA but the cars were close to $200 for a 4 day weekend the last time there late Oct I paid $8.50 a day tax and all included. So I went with SNA, and in the past went with SAN. when last in LA gas was appx $3.25 a gal and the price of oil has gone up since then

my car this time is $78 and now if I went to book it its appx $175 for 4 days.

FL can be just as expensive.BTW Im getting a compact anything above that was thru the roof

Going away even using Priceline etc isnt something that will be cheap when everything is added up

If $$ are really that tight, Id suggets finding a place within a few hrs drive of NY, at leats tahtw ay youd save on teh plane tkt and no car rental hopefully someones got 1.

250 a week car รท5 =50

getting Close but still no cigar,

I opened my chase acct mid Nov, early Dec I get 10k & 12,500k yes its suppose to be 25k . I tried calling Chase they had no idea which was their right side and which their left. I called the guy who opened my acct.As I was waiting for him to pick-up I went thru the papers he gave me, Turns out 2 are for tracing any missing Miles, when I read it it states "To receive your 15,000 bonuys miles (12,500 from Chase + 2,500 from CO) you must

- make a non-pin debit card purchase within 60 days of account opening

Please allow 6-8 weeks after your first qualifying purchase for Bonus miles to post to your OnePass account.

Pt is the 22,500 from Chase posted on 12/7, Im still waiting for CO (I learned today its not Chase) to post their 2500, guess they will wait the full 8 weeks.

So unless you each have at least 2500 in a CO acct you wont be able to book anything till CO posts their 2500 to your acct. By then it might be very late Feb or early March and good luck finding something for a month later/ Not saying its impossible but hardly likely

BTW if any driver is under 25 it will cost you alot more then $250 unless you can get it wavied with some code

$35 per 1000 or $70 for 2500 link see top of page; http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/apps/onepass/promotions/registrationDetails.aspx?promoCode=TB8135&SID=39E7B65D1EBD4BA2A96141342A0AFD4D

if you purcahse them after 12/31 it will be $105 for 3000 as no 25% bonus. You cant give yourself a gift so each of you will send the other a gift of 2500

Not worth it IMO. As for most likely <$100 more you can buy the tkt and not have to worry if a flight for a free tkt will be available or it is but not the times you want, this is for FL

Before you buy anything, go onto Continental.com and see what if any Saver Awards they are offering when you guys want to fly. No sense spending the $$ if CO doesnt have anything available

yep 40k in CO miles and $10 will get you from NY-HNL on UA not CO , CO doesnt have any Saver Pass space but for 70k you can fly on CO. The  UA are with at least 1 stop

as I said could very well be that Hawaii isnt a Spring Break Spot. In yrs past the Big places were Palm springs,Ca so LAX,SNA,SAN,LGB,BUR,ONT get the  biz, alot of FL cities, Cancun,Cabo,Vegas, Acapulco. never remember ever hearing about any place on Hawaii being a so called Hot Spot for SB

So let me see you cant even get 25k into your hands and your mad that people are getting hawaii

I'll work hard but have no $

you need to find another game to play,LoL

those of us who are status junkies have some disposable income, our Game is how to spend the least yet reap the most.

so for me its not I cant afford the $1000 to go say NY-BKK (Bangkok) but rather how can I do it for less. and get my EQMs down to as little as possible. Meaning getting what I pay per mile in the air for as little as I can. so if I can get that NY-BKK for $800 great but it means Im paying .10 cents per EQM (mile) I aint gonna go its too much.

I wanted to go to Madrid from EWR its $354 and I would earn 7700 miles, well if I fly from SEA (Seatle) its $433 and 14k+ or for $80 more I will earn an extra 6k. BINGO, so I work on getting to SEA for as close to $200 as possible.

So EWR-MAD for $354 means Im paying .046 per mile by going via SEA its .0348 per mile so worth flying to SEA, but since I have a $200 CS cert it means I will pay only $513 NY-SEA-NY & SEA-MAD-SEA or .025 per EQM (Mile). So yes it means spending more $$ but it also means getting each Mile at a very cheap price thusly its very worth spending the $$$. this is what we do on FT (its not how can I fly for free or stay for free perse although thats apart of it) its maxing out each $

FT was started as a means of Road Warriors helping each other out in the pursuit of Status in carriers and hotel programs. also to exchange different promos to yield ever more Miles &/or Pts, and went in all directions from there. it was far from being a DD or FW or SD

you are playing an entirely different game and are trying to play without the necessary equipment to boot
