credit card / atm in israel
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:22:33 PM »
I'll be going to Israel for six months starting this March.  Does anyone have any recommendation on a bank account and credit card to open in order to avoid hefty fees?  I already have a SPG card and BA Visa card.  My current bank accounts are with chase and hsbc

Thanks

Charles Schwab has no foreign exchange fees on their ATM or credit cards.

Most credit cards charge 2-3% foreign exchange fee, but you do still get the miles/points to soften the blow.  Plus you have many protections with credit cards that you don't have with cash.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I use Schwab - they give 2% back. Everyone else here uses capital one for some odd reason...

You can open a bank account at the Israeli post.

Bank Hadoar.

It used to be almost free.

schwab still offers the card but took it down from their website.  You need to apply by calling them on the phone.  I guess the 2% cash back and no transaction costs made it a big winner for those traveling internationally and they are no longer actively advertising it

Forex fees have nothing to do with he type of card and everything to do with the issuing bank.
