Google +1 email trick
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:18:12 AM »
If you are trying to sign up for something that only allows you to use one email address, use this awesome new trick with gmail.

take your email address:

myemailadrress@gmail.com

add a + after your address. examples:
myemailaddress+1@gmail.com    or myemailaddress+blahblah@gmail.com
(you can add anything after the +)

gmail will route this address to your real address!

I'm not sure the exact semantics but I think Dan once posted than you can put a period in your email address I know for sure it works if you wanna refer yourself to groupon eg. itsalmostfriday@gmail.com and itsalmost.friday@gmail.com will both go  to the same email address

The period  trick and the "+" trick have both been discussed before.  They both work.

Some sites will not work with "+" but do work with "."

Yup. To figure out your username Google ignores all periods (.) before the @ sign as well as ignoring everything after a plus (+).

This is commonly referred to as + aliasing. Very useful for opening numerous accounts and for managing your emailing or tracking spam. But like helpme said, many sites will give you an error message if your email address has a + sign in it.

True that will work for an addition account but I prefer the + method, it makes it easy to sort my mail

So when I send someone an email what address does he see? IIRC he sees meshugener.crazy@gmail.com if Google don't recognize, why does he see it? And lets say I sign in as meshugenercrazy, would he see it without the ..?

When it said "Gmail doesn't recognize periods" that means they don't distinguish it as a separate email address (as yahoo and others DO) and will deliver your mail anyway. The mail will arrive showing periods. In other words they notice and recognize the periods, but send the email to you anyway.

If you login as meshugenercrazy@gmail.com, the recipient will see the sender as meshugener.crazy@gmail.com as that is the only actual email address that you 'own'. For the future though, when giving out your email address, if it's easier to just tell it to people without the period go ahead and do that.

Not such a new trick. You can do it with hotmail/live as well. I know it doesn't work with Yahoo.

Gmail will ignore the periods so those are different emails, but everything after the plus is ignored so they would be the same.

not really, I tried opening a new gmail account with a username for example abcdef@gmail.com but it said username unavailable so it gave me other options for a similar one and one option was abc.def@gmail.com   so if the don't recognize periods how would they recommend the username just with a period in the middle?
