Bonuses that I got today for keeping cards open after an annual fee:
Starwood AMEX consumer: 3,000 points.
Diners Club: Waived $95 annual fee, 10,000 points.

(or you would have kept the card open anyways.... because you needed it for other reasons like the additional warranty it gives you on purchases....)

I'll bet AMEX has some kind of system in place (Like I know Sprint has) about how much value each customer is worth and how far to go to retain them.
But then again I do encounter reps who are unwilling to play ball. As is true with CS reps in every industry if you don't like the answer you got just keep on trying...

Wow. deos aa also have one of those????... Sometimes they wont send me a postcard in the mail without charging.... lol and I used to be a platinum member...
