I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Always worth trying a few more times, but it is based on spending.

I figured as much, that's why I asked:

How much do you spend annually on this card?

Please answer my question (unless it's a secret).

5K SPG retention bonus points posted along with the points from the current statement.
Gotta love AMEX!

Dan-
When you called AMEX CS did you say "cancel a card" and speak with the cancellation department? or did you speak to the regular customer service?
I have tried both so far with no luck.  The cancellation department said that sometimes when you submit the cancellation request then it is sent to a different department that offers retention bonuses, but there is no guarantee, and sometimes it will just get canceled immediately.

What do you recommend?

Sounds like the guy who told a Chase branch near me that he was opening and closing accounts every year just for miles and now that branch checks to see if you are a churner before opening an account for you.

It's not about you having that issue.  It's about you and your careless remarks killing the deal for everyone else.  You know supervisors do listen in on calls very often.
Don't make me regret making posts like this one...

Just to clarify, I never cancel my credit card without a legit excuse (need more miles isn't legit in my books) so I don't see how it can cause an issue but you obviously know better

Why would you tell a rep that you'll take the miles and call back tomorrow to cancel?  Was it not good enough for you take the miles and not say a word?

I thought perhaps it would be stealing if I did that wanted to make sure it wasn't. Now I know and I don't say anything (happened to me again last night)

Just called AMEX about my SPG  card and they were only willing to give me 200 starpoints to keep it open. (granted, i only spent about 10,000 on it this year, but should i try tomorrow and see if i can get more? or am i being unrealistic?)
Also i called my chase united card and they are giving me 1000 miles to keep it open :) I'm pretty happy about that
and i  called my citi aadvantage and they said they would give me a statement credit of 25 dollars which im happy about since i still have like six months until i get charged a fee anyhow and can cancel before then... (didnt tell them that though)

In regards to your Starwood amex I had the same issue when I tried to cancel they only offered me 200 pts. I called back a couple of times till a Rep. gave me 3000 pts.

In order to understand recursion, you first need to understand recursion.
