RESTAURANTS (the best of)

There are hundreds of kosher restaurants in Paris.  The locals generally don't eat the meat under Beis Din as they don't require Glatt meat.  But they will eat everything else under Beis din.

Activities:
-Segway Tour. Please do not PM Ergel with requests for coupon codes. The codes are long dead
-Seine River Tour
-Eiffel Tour (Metro: Trocadero -6,9)
-Versailles Palace and Gardens. Never wait on line to buy tickets. 1. Use museum pass 2. Buy in advance 3. There are vending machines near the bathrooms (you have to poke around to find them) without lines. (if you go during a really busy time and the line seems endlessly long, go to the gardens first and return to the palace in the afternoon when lines are shorter). To get an audio guide, you usually proceed across the Royal Courtyard after passing security. If the lines for the audio guides are long, turn left in the Courtyard, to the Apartments of the daughter's of Louis XV’s. There you'll find another counter where you can get audio guides, with no lines at all. You can then exit the apartments and continue along the tour, bypassing the longer line.
-Louvre Art Museum (Closed Tuesday) (Metro: Palais Royal - Musée du Louvre -1,7) Shushan/Purim artifacts that can be seen at the Louvre, per the book Purim and the Persian Empire.
-D'Orsay Art Museum (Closed Monday) (Metro: Solférino -12)
-Musée de l'Orangerie des Tuileries (closed Tuesday) small museum featuring Monet's lilies (Metro Concorde: -1,8,12)
-Centre Georges Pompidou modern art museum open 11-9. closed tuedays (Metro: Rambuteau -11)
-Tuileries Gardens. (Metro: Tuileries -1)
-Paris sewer museum Smells really bad but an interesting look at the sewer system
-Champs Elysees shopping (Metro: Champs-Élysées - Clemenceau -1,13)
-Arc de Triomphe (Metro: Charles de Gaulle - Étoile -1,2,6)
-Operan National De Paris opera house. tours daily 11:30 and 2:30. Admission included in Museum Pass, tour extra
-Montmartre (Great neighborhood to walk around with boutiques, artists, and great views, and a funicular that kids will love) (Metro: abbesses -12, Anvers -2)
-The Great Synagogue (La Victoria) is beautiful but the main shul is only open on Shabbos mornings for Shacharis, but definitely worthwhile if you're there over Shabbos (Metro: Notre-Dame-de-Lorette -12)

Hotels:
-Park Hyatt Paris (Hyatt cat 7) is an outstanding value for your points. They used to give a phenomenal kosher breakfast but now it's barely even worth requesting.  Still rooms are a decent size for Paris, the Spa facilities are very nice, and the intoxicating smell used throughout the hotel for forever be linked with the romance of Paris. Ideally located between the Opera and Tuileries metro stations.
The Park Hyatt has free parking, though driving and parking elsewhere in Paris is very difficult.
The Park Hyatt has also complimentary bikes for guests.
There is a backdoor for entry on shabbos.

-The InterContinental Paris - Le Grand is not far from the Park Hyatt. It cost 70k IHG points per night or you can use IHG free nights. It is a good alternitive if the PH is not available or if you don't have/don't want to spend 30k Hyatt points per night.

-The Westin (SPG cat 6) is not as luxurious at the Park Hyatt but is located nearby and does the trick if you only have Starpoints and not Chase or Hyatt points.

Shabbos meals:
-Chabad of Champs Elysees has great shabbos meals and you're sure to bump into other tourists there as well to share tips.
It is a 30 minute walk to the Park Hyatt, but the walk is quite lovely via the Tuileries Gardens and the Champs Elysees.
Reservations are required: http://www.chabadchampselysees.com/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/888847/jewish/Shabbat-at-Chabad-Champs-Elyses.htm
-if you don't/can't eat at Chabad, they suggest getting takeout from Ben & Cook located in the 8th. Hashgacha: rabbinate Lubavitch De France 33 1 45 61 03 95. 35 Euro for 2 challas, 2 dips, meatballs with noodles or veggies for 2. they close at 3pm on Fridays (in the summer). call for more info
- Friday night meals at Grand Synagogue http://www.tiny.cc/chabbat

There is no eruv in Paris. Consider taking the metro to shul with your talis bag along with return tickets for motzei shabbos.

Transport from CDG:
-If you are going to the Opera area you can take the RoissyBus (pronounced Wahsee-Boos as you will get blank stares if you ask for the Royzee-Bus) which goes there nonstop. You can pay by credit card in the RoissyBus waiting station or on the bus.  The cost is €10.  It is a 5 minute walk to the Park Hyatt.

-There are also train options from CDG: the subway is located in terminal 2E/2F, to get to paris its ligne B (Blue) it should take approximately 30minutes to get to Gare Du Nord
it cost 9€10 each way per person

- Mendy Taxi: 0(1133) 6 50 99 82 93 http://mendystransport.com/en/
- Shimon taxi: 0(1133)6 98 27 16 08  Tamidshuttle@gmail.com

- Uber, Bolt are the best option to get to paris cheapest and fastest

Metro:
The subway is fast, efficient, and cheap. A book of 10 tickets is 13,30€ for adults and 6,65€ for kids.
The subway closes between 12:30 and 2am.

Map:
Streetwise Paris cannot emphasize enough, this is really a must. Of course, if you have GMaps and data you don't need this map unless you really like paper.

Other Tips
-If you plan on visiting several of the items covered by the Museum Pass - make sure to check it out and price out your options.  Many times it is worth it to get a one-day or multi-day Museum Pass to save some money and more importantly, time (see link for more details: http://en.parismuseumpass.com/)
-Double check days when museums/sites are closed as many do close on different days of the week.

Thanksgiving in Paris
« Reply #281 on: October 17, 2011, 01:57:17 AM »
Looking for some help from fellow DDF’ers on planning my upcoming trip to Paris over Thanksgiving weekend thanks to the KLM glitch.

I have just finished reading the Paris trip report thread, and Dan's personal TR and am looking for some advice on my particular trip.

Here are the relevant details:

Flight: I will be flying KLM (NYC-AMS-CDG and back), and I will be arriving at 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon and leaving Monday at 10:00am.

Hotel: Dan raves about the Park Hyatt Paris, and I have enough points to stay there for free, but I am no longer Diamond, just Platinum (through the Hyatt card). Few questions: 1) Anyway for me to get the Diamond benefits anyway (having someone else book the hotel for me)? 2) As far as matching, here is my story: I got Hilton Gold matched to Hyatt Diamond. Before that expired, I matched back to Hilton to Gold till 2013. Is there anyway for me to *again* match back to Hyatt Diamond, or is it a one-per kind of thing? 3) If I do not end up staying at the PHP (lack of Diamond benefits and/or ostentatious price/number of mixed reviews/downgraded breakfast), can someone recommend another hotel at which they've had a good experience?

Shabbas: Totally up in the air - may stay with family friends.

Food + Activities: I have to plan the following: Thursday evening's activity and food, Friday's activity and food (Shabbas is at 4:43pm), Saturday night's activity and food, Sunday's activities and foods.

I think for one of the nights (open to your suggestions), I am going to do (as has been recommended a number of times) the Tib's (for main) and La Marina (for dessert-Farandole anyone?) combo. For another night/lunch (open to your suggestions) I'll hit Pitzman. Need at least a couple other ideas for food. Perhaps I can go to Il Conte for one of the remaining two nights. Another posted suggested L’as Du Falafel as being the best felafel ever tasted.

Thus, tentatively, let's say:

Thursday Evening: Check in to hotel (suggestions?); Food - Tib's + La Marina. Activity - Perhaps nighttime view of the Eiffel Tower. (if not, suggestions?)
Friday: Breakfast - suggestions? Lunch - Pitzman. Activity - Segway tour of Paris, perhaps? (Open to suggestions)?
Shabbas: Not sure yet.
Saturday Night: Food - looking for something light-ish (suggestions?); Activity - suggestions?
Sunday: Activity - Versailles anyone? If not, any other suggestions? Lunch - L’as Du Falafel perhaps? Dinner - Il Conte/Darjeeling?
Monday: Fly home!

In exchange for all of your help, I will post a Trip Report when I get back, complete with high-res photos. Thanks!

OK, if no one wants to comment on food or activities, can you comment/suggest on this:

I thought the Park Hyatt was very nice. Breakfast was a nice added touch but it is a really nice hotel in a good location. Obviously wouldn't lay out the cash for it, but I would use points.

Night time view of Eifel Tower was very nice. Or you could climb the Arc De Triumph and get a nice view as well

Quote
Friday: Breakfast - suggestions? Lunch - Pitzman. Activity - Segway tour of Paris, perhaps? (Open to suggestions)?

Pitzman's was fine, nothing to rave about IMHO. Segway tour was pretty cool but it was pretty expensive. PM for a way to save some money on it.

Sunday: Activity - Versailles anyone? If not, any other suggestions? Lunch - L’as Du Falafel perhaps? Dinner - Il Conte/Darjeeling?
Monday: Fly home!

I thought Versailles is a must see (not so much for the gardens but for the oppulence of the palace). I don't know if you will have crowds, in the summer it was unbearable. I would recommend getting there at around 2 PM, going to the gardens first and renting backs and then coming back to the palace at around 4 PM when the lines are shorter and there are less people inside. Can do another activity in the morning

Thanks for your detailed post.

When did you go? Seems that PHP has cut back significantly on the their free breakfast amenity (assuming I'd even be able to attain Diamond status before I go). Would it have been worth $900/22k without the breakfast?

Night time view of Eifel Tower was very nice. Or you could climb the Arc De Triumph and get a nice view as well

Havent heard of the Arc De Triumph, but will look into it. Thanks.

Segway tour was pretty cool but it was pretty expensive. PM for a way to save some money on it.

Assuming you get the % off, you think its worth it?

I got a downgraded breakfast. Wasn't that great but it was nice-bread and some danishes.
Definitely not worth $900, but 22k points (let's valuate it at $400) is a little more reasonable. Now that I am DDFer I like to travel in style without spending a lot of cash. Hard to that without using points. Paying for any nice hotel would be at least $300 out of pocket. I'd rather spend the points. Unless you would rather stay in a average hotel for $150-$200, then I would do that.

Havent heard of the Arc De Triumph, but will look into it. Thanks.

Napoleon (started) builiding it after his major triumph. Pretty famous.

Depends on your budget, but yes it was very informative and you got a good quick look at the city. Ask someone who has done it in the fall, I could imagine it being pretty chilly on a Segway for an extended period of time.

Know of any decent ones? I'm finding it hard to pull the 22k trigger for the PHP as I may want to use my UR points for something else (still undecided though).

I'll probably do it in the end. Don't have so much time in Paris and would like to get the "quick good look" at the city. As far as activities go, I'm pretty much a get-up-and-do-anything type of guy...

If you like famous art, there is obviously the Louvre and the musee d'orsay. A little off the beaten path is Musee d'loreange- a museum built to showcase Monet's lilies. A cute little museum which you can see the whole thing in a half hour. Modern art at the Centre Pompidou. A very interesting exhibit on Eichman in the Holocaust museum and the permanent Holocaust exhibit. We went to the sewer museum which was also interesting.

Here were some of my highlights in terms of activities (was there in March 2011): Musee D'orsay, Tour of the Opera building, L'orangerie, the Louvre (guided tour to hit the impt. stuff), Eiffel Tower

Food: Darjeeling, Falafel, Pitzman, Le Chateubriand

I wrote up a TR on that trip. See if you can find it.

Also, for Shabbos I would check out the Great Synagogue La Victoire (sp?) because it is maginificent and only open on Shabbos morning davening.

I guess you're an impressionist art guy? Am I up a creek if I'm not that cultured (read: not into art)?

RE: Food -- heard of all except Le Chateubriand... good meat?

If I stay close enough, I'll def stop by the GS... thanks!

Also, in your TR you say you used audio tours - can you (or anyone else) recommend a good audio tour set for paris?

@AJK

When you decide on what you have planned as activities ... Please share

Will do, b'n.

Chateubriand is not mehadrin.

We're not into art and still had a blast in Paris.  Loved the sites, the food, the hotel, the chabad house we ate at for shabbos, etc.  The only unpleasantness was the smell of the city itself and the anti-semitism.

I do like impressionist art. As does my wife. We used Rick Steves podcasts for a few of the museums and Versailles. Also we used the Rick Steve's Paris book to do some self guided stuff.

Chaeteubriand isn't mehadrin but we spoke with friends in Paris who we trust who told us the meat is. That is not to say you shouldn't do your own homework and decide what you're comfortable with.

Tried to book PHP for 24-28th. No award space available (maybe cuz of Thanksgiving ???).

So outta luck there.

There is only one night (27th) available at the Hyatt Regency Madeleine.

Any advice/suggestions?

You waited far too long.  Need to book most Paris hotels at least a month in advance or else hope for a last-minute cancellation.
