SPG Gold Upgrade

i have SPG Gold status (free upgrade/ 4pm checkout). my parents will be spending a shabbos at a westin. what's the chances they can cash in on my 4pm checkout. does the member have to be present? on the reservation?
anyone have any experience with this?

If I am gold and my friend books a room and I am a additional guest will we get a upgrade?

Maybe, but you're much more likely with SPG Plat. Are you paying or using points?

i am not traveling with them.
does the reservation have to be made in the cardmember's name? or can the cardmember be an additional guest? (does having the same last name help?)

You don't need to be, additional guests get all the benefits of the main guest and can check-in and out without the main guest.
