Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

okay so I am clueless when it comes to booking tickets. If I plan on flying from NY to FL sometime in August for a week is my best bet just to buy a ticket or can I get cheaper by "acquiring" miles (avios?) and booking that way?

It depends on cheap you can get a ticket for.

But if I don't currently have a supply of avios then I would either have to calculate it based on UR value (15000 X .018 = $270) which is too much or can I purchase avios or no one would use an account for such small tix? (does that make any sense?)

What do you mean? I just got off the phone with a rep and she said I made a claim that's 1 in a million but then again it was with a foreign company so it's probably just 1 in a million for US standards...

Yes, or you keep the old one open and consolidate its credit line into the new account once the new account is opened.

or you keep the old one open and leave it alone until it's time for the annual fee, then close it.

Right, that too.

Or, when it's time to pay the annual fee, you call the CC company and get the fee waived / or credited back, and keep the card for another year.
