Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

True. But he is looking to apply for more cards than one...
I usually just apply for the SP version I don't have (Visa, Mastercard) and close down the other to get it approved. And I usually close down the Uniteds and move over the credit to a different card currently open and then apply.

So shifting credit does not make a difference if done via reconsideration or via reallocation?
Regarding you credit score? No.  Its the pull that you get when applying for a card.

Right. But does reallocating still work with chase, like can I just call before I apply to shift some credit from one card to another?

You would call after you apply, not before.

From united cards to sp. Just easier to shift before so when it comes to recon I won't be shifting from a united to a united.

I pay most of it after it posts and the rest after the statement closes.

How come? Why would you divide it like that?
And when does "the statement close"?

Personally I like knowing my bills are paid off.
But more importantly you keep your credit utilization score low by only using a smaller amount of your credit.

Your statement closes...when it closes. Each credit card has a different date.

What i meant was: Does it closes at the end of a cycle, and then you get your bill etc?
Or once you get the bill is it too late?

It closes on a certain date. After that date is when I pay the rest.  The bill comes in the actual mail a few days later usually. Either way.

So i should keep on top of it, online, and pay as soon as it closes?

Whatever you leave over to pay after the statement closes can be paid anytime from when it closes until the due date. That makes no difference.

Ah okay. I understand- theres a closing date, when the cycle ends. And a due date- when you have to pay it by in order not to incur fees.
(is that right?)
Thanks alot for you clarification!
