Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

Does Amex consider Walmart groceries?
No. In case someone asks, no for Target also.  :P
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

I am trying to help a friend fly to London in several months in Business Class by using points / miles.
What would the best option be? He currently has no alliance membership, but want to apply for the (2-3) credit cards that will make it possible.

Any advice would be helpful. I still haven't figured out how to do this properly :(
I only paid 15% by switching to dansdeals

He can open a chase Sapphire,  United and Ink Plus and he'd be good to go. Does he have good credit?

hello. i am from canada. I've followed various suggestions from Dan regarding credit cards with points, transfers and the such. Is there any recommendation for credit cards in canada? I can't just get US cards as that makes no sense for us. What do you suggest?

I'm pretty sure SPG has a Canadian card, though I can't find it in dans post now.

My sister is flying with her kids on US Airways. What's the best way to get into the lounges in PHL?

Also, any chance they will let her in with an expired day pass?

The best cards are the ones you would like best.

As far as ease of getting the cards, if you have a short / non-existent credit history, you will be better off going for non "Signature" cards with Chase. I would say Sapphire Preferred is easy to get because it is in their own currency. Freedom should be good too, and that's always good to have in your wallet.

As far as Amex, go for the SPG. I've seen them issue it to a small credit line, and those points are considered to be tops.

Citi AA cards might be another good avenue to try. Use the most current 50K links you can get your hands on.

CMIIW, but AFAIK they don't issue Sapphire Preferred w/ less than 5k CL, which I doubt they'll give to s/o w/ little to no credit history.

+1 IME, Freedom, BA, and United (non signature) were easier.

I did recommend Freedom, but for cards with mega bonuses, I found the Sapphire to be easiest for those with skimpy CH.

They gave the Sapphire Preferred to my brother when they wouldn't give him anything else, because they weren't able to give him the 5K CL at the time.

So how did they approve him for the SP  if they weren't able to give him a $5k CL?

They gave a non signature version of the Sapphire Preferred.

Isn't that the regular sapphire (not preferred)  with no sign up bonus?
