The reps at Amex Recon claim they don't have the power to overturn a denial and the department that handles that is not a customer-facing team, i.e. I can't speak with them. Was the dude BSing me?

2 HUCA's, but got exact same answer on both so I guess that this is the process and they indeed can't overwrite this decision.
I did not try a supervisor.

IME they have no authority all they could do is rush the process or push the application by getting the approval faster.

Is there a department that has the authority to push apps through that we can call?

Sometimes they can push through a pending app over the phone, but sometimes they'll tell you it has to be reviewed by the <enter fancy name> department, in which case there's no way to expedite the approval process.
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

Or sometimes they tell you a letter was sent out requiring more info. ..

I guess this is recon. I chatted with amex to close my spg personal and move cl to blue card. she said she submitted request and it has to be reviewed. I got a letter that is denied because the spg card credit line is too new. Anybody have this before? Any way around it? Should I call up?

Amex recon for business spg told me I had too many products. This even though I have multiple businesses with them.

He told me to close some cards, but even then couldn't guarantee approval. Wouldn't do it for me, said had to call CS, close cards, wait 48 hrs and call back to attempt it.

Is this normal for Amex?
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

They have a new 4-card policy (not including charge cards).

That's across business and personal (or multiple businesses)?
