Did you see the price?

If he flew enough, he would still have it, and if he will fly a lot, he will get it. for those couple of month pay this amount?  doesn't sound logic to me.

fly 5000 elite qualifying points (on some fares its .5 for mile most fares it is 1:1) in 3 months and you become gold. and 10,000 in 3 months you become plat.
now they change which chalenge you are going for. back then if you got 9000 points in 3 months you would not get gold (unless you took on the gold chalenge) basicly you were stuck with the chalenge you took, now you can change it

AHA! therein lies your mistake. most fares that most of us fly (namely deep discount) earn only .5 point per mile flown. i dont think people here are flying full fare economy. thus, you must fly 2 roundtrips to europe.

Old problem, with Gold you have the same thing.

However almost everything can be worked out, by showing the card.

2 roundtrips to europe to make you plat! one would still make you gold. (back then I was flying MIA CDG) and I always bought the cheapest fares and a lot of them were 1:1. Even some of the deeply discounted ones. not sure exactly how their system worked... the only fares i had an issue with were the ones i bought from STA
