From the T&C:
Earn SPG Gold Status

If during any calendar year, Eligible Purchases on your Card account are $30,000 or more, you (the Basic Card Member) will be enrolled for at least twelve months in the Gold Preferred level of the Starwood Preferred Guest® loyalty program (unless you are already enrolled in an equivalent or higher level). Starwood associates excluded. Please allow 12-16 weeks after your Eligible Purchases equal or exceed such amount for the applicable year for enrollment to become effective. Eligible Purchases means purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

does that include loading the REDcard?
Of course. But they have no way of knowing it is not a real purchase.

So I signed up and got approved for the spg card. I went to target to meet the threshold (via RC) and Amex put a hold on my account do to fraud. I am currently in Israel now and in order to unfreeze my account they want me to go to the U. S.  Embassy to fill out a notary, fax a picture of my social and license. Has anyone ever experienced such a thing? Is there any way around going to the embassy? (the next appointment is in 2/3 months...)

It's a fairly common fraud alert for a sudden big purchase.
If you have a history with a bank, this does not happen as often but definitely if this purchase was out  of your established range, that will automatically trigger a fraud alert. They are not trying to be hard on you. It's for your own protection.

why do you have to tell them your not in the states, just send them what they need. They're obviously not asking you to come down anywhere personally.

I want to cancel my SPG card, but am waiting for some pending points. Amex chat rep said they can't be expedited, unless I call SPG and have them do it. Is that true, or should I HUCA?

a little of topic. but didn't want to open a new thread for this.
if I got approved for Amex gold and then Amex called me with questions so I told them to drop it and cancel it.
the card was never activated and never linked to a MR account.
can I apply now for that card again or its called that I had it already.
as the language on the application says that you need to never had enrolled this card in a MR account.
any help will be appreciated.
