Here's my experience - went there to see a friend. His prof (or maybe it was the dean) came by to critique him and instruct him. About a month later, a chunk of my tooth fell out. When I went to see him, he apologized, and said, "So, remember when my professor interrupted me? I kind of missed a few things. I told you you had no cavities? You have 5 cavitities, and 2 root canals."

The tooth that cracked needed a crown.

Lesson 1: Don't go to a friend. If he hadn't been my friend, I would have considered suing, considering the damage done since the time he'd seen me.

Lesson 2: Well, I wouldn't go back there too quickly.

Maybe my "friend" is worse than average, but that was my experience.

Quite an interesting experience.  What school did you go to?

So I will refrain from saying anything bad about the school but it sounds like he didnt do any procedures on you. What damage did he do to you other than not diagnosing you correctly and you wouldve needed that crown anyways

If we would've known about it right away, I might not have - when you have most of the tooth, you have more options, from what I understand.

Also, the decay and infection continues until it's treated.

Your understanding is correct but 1 month isn't enough time for the tooth to deteriorate from fill-able to broken and needing a crown. They probably would have discovered it when excavating the decay.

Most dentists that take medicaid are gonna be mills ie they see as many patients as possible. If you want good comprehensive care and are on medicaid and have some time to kill i recommend going to a dental school...NYU or Columbia in NYC.
Let's not forget stony brook. It's a little far but it's your best bet (I might be biased )

Question: According to NYS law, is a patient entitled to request and keep his/her dental x-rays?

I went to a dentist, got a full checkup, and he took quite a few x-rays (paid for by insurance).

At the end of the appointment, when I asked if I can please have the x-rays, he said that according to the law he is not allowed to give them to me.

Now, to me that sounds like one huge load of baloney, but I better not assume.

Is anyone familiar with what the law really says?

Can our DDF resident dentist @ushadude chime in?

TIA!

The dentist keeps the original. You could ask for a copy.

The ADA code of ethics http://www.ada.org/en/about-the-ada/principles-of-ethics-code-of-professional-conduct/patient-autonomy

here is the excerpt for your case
1.B.1. Furnishing Copies of Records. A dentist has the ethical obligation on request of either the patient or the patient's new dentist to furnish in accordance with applicable law, either gratuitously or for nominal cost, such dental records or copies or summaries of them, including dental X-rays or copies of them, as will be beneficial for the future treatment of that patient. This obligation exists whether or not the patient's account is paid in full.

Thank you! The question then is, are dentists bound by ADA codes?

I believe yes and a dentist can be reprimanded depending on the case for going against it

Both
To clarify, I was asking if you had a good experience.

I never heard of this dentist, but just to make sure there's no biases here (nothing personal), are you related?

He's my dentist,  only good experience.  I was answering the op who was looking for a good dentist in Brooklyn area but did not realize that the discussion shifted.

In case needed in the future. Whats the difference as long as the patient is getting exact copies?
