At dentist for "six month checkup, xrays and cleaning "

Just realized that the $65 cleaning and also the x-ray are a scam.
Il have the dr take a quick look and I'm out.

I don't even really buy into the requirement for a bi-annual Dr examination.  - I would never get a physical twice a year.. Especially if not covered by insurance...

Eta xrays are needed for seeing between teeth.,.. But cleaning is not a necessary expense.

A dentist checkup/ cleaning isn't comparable to a physical. Physical they really just check to make sure everything is ok and doing blood tests etc. By a dentist beside for checking for oral cancer and checking for cavities they also get rid of all that plaque that built up on your teeth since the last checkup. With out getting the plaque removed you are keeping the bacteria in your mouth and in essence giving your teeth the chance to rot away.

I get rid of plaque by brushing. No? Seriously, is there a medical need for a professional cleaning?

There is plaque buildup even with brushing.

Now I phoned around to see who takes my insurance. Some of these dentist business networks come across very Sleazy.
They'l do and say anything to get you in their chair. - force you to take "panoramic xrays" and whitenings etc.
If they answer the phone "how can we make you smile", just hang up.
The sole practitioners are safer.

Went to Chemed couple of months ago for checkup and xrays. They said I needed 5 cavities!
I subsequently signed up with my firms dental plan and went too a dr who accepts the plan. Just went for him to check and more exrays, he said I don't need any work at all!!

Wow, one of them is either corrupt or grossly incompetent.

Which is it?

Any dentist that said you need 5 cavities is corrupt (unfortunately most are IME). They need you to have cavities so that you come to them for fillings.

That being said. I stand by my statement in parentheses above.

The surprising thing is the dentist that said you don't need any work despite the fact that you have insurance. Unfortunately most dentist will try to milk the insurance to the max.

When I got braces the first dr said he'd need to pull 4 teeth in order for him to do the braces. Second dr did it without pulling anything. Always good to get a second opinion on anything big.

That may be possible but how does that answer the difference of dentist opinion? I have had that more than once also.

When someone has a cavity, not every case is black and white. Depending on the dentist's training, they may be more aggressive in treatment planning. One dentist may fill deep grooves that are "sticky," others will just monitor. Some dentists fill E2 lesions, others wait until it penetrates dentin. Etc, etc, etc

There may be dentists who are unethical but to generalize and demonize an entire profession is just stupid.

I'm both + much much more.

I didn't demonize the profession, I just said that one of two the dentist's I met was either incompetent or corrupt.

I understand that there are more and less aggressive treaters, but to go from 5 fillings to zero is pretty amazing imho.
