ConEd is running a program together with a company called ThinkEco called coolNYC. They are providing free units to NYC residents that plug in between your AC and outlet that act as a timer, thermostat, and energy monitor.

"During demand response for coolNYC, your window air conditioners will turn on and off at a slightly higher thermostat setting so that it's used less overall, but in a way that keeps your home sufficiently cool. You'll be notified a day ahead of any events, and you always have the choice to opt in or out, each time - opt outs can happen both before and during the event. Most summers, there is a need for just 2-4 demand response event."

You get to keep the modlet even after the summer is over its great for shabbos and yom roc you can set up the timer you can control your ac from wherever you are from the app or from the website portal it's only for nyc residents if you order 2 or less you will get a USB receiver that has to connect to a computer if you order 3 or more you get the gateway that plugs into your router

Sure, all it does is turn the outlet on and off. Its like a light switch. By linking the remote it adds a thermostat so that it can turn it on and off at certain temperatures. You can even use it for a power strip to control multiple items at once.

The guy who installed it told me when he did an installation the day before, the "customer" was basically making it very apparent he was going to be using it for his home theater. Despite the fact that on the website they ask you to name what is plugged in (you're supposed to select A/C), the program is intended for A/C window units.

Got an email from Con Ed today with these offers:

Summer is heating up, but it's not too late to cash in on some cool offers from Con Edison.
•   Upgrade to a more efficient central-A/C system and save up to $600.
•   Buy an ENERGY STAR room air-conditioner and get $25
•   See how much you money could save with a FREE programmable thermostat (worth $300) and receive $25 as a thank you.

Does anyone else find that the thermostat/remotes never accurately reflect the current temperature? I've basically figured out by now what the appropriate temp is on the remote to be comfortable (usually around 75), but it seems weird.

Right, but then you have to actually turn it on or off based on how it feels, instead of having it automatically turn on and off to maintain a desired temperature.

ETA: In my 2nd bedroom I have a very basic, small, old AC. It has 2 speed settings and a 1-9 temperature dial. But if I just use that dial, all it does is turn the compressor on and off. By using the thermostat/remote (once I figure out the appropriate number to set it at) I can set it and leave it the whole night without going in and waking up my kid.

I get my internet through university so thankfully I don't have to pay but don't control the Router or have password information.  Any way this can still be set up?

Thanks!

I'm looking forward to getting this.
Besides for all the cute things it does, has anyone found that they actually save $ on their electric bill with this?

Buy a repeater, and login to the campus wifi. Then plug the smart ac unit into it.
