ConEd is running a program together with a company called ThinkEco called coolNYC. They are providing free units to NYC residents that plug in between your AC and outlet that act as a timer, thermostat, and energy monitor.

"During demand response for coolNYC, your window air conditioners will turn on and off at a slightly higher thermostat setting so that it's used less overall, but in a way that keeps your home sufficiently cool. You'll be notified a day ahead of any events, and you always have the choice to opt in or out, each time - opt outs can happen both before and during the event. Most summers, there is a need for just 2-4 demand response event."

You get to keep the modlet even after the summer is over its great for shabbos and yom roc you can set up the timer you can control your ac from wherever you are from the app or from the website portal it's only for nyc residents if you order 2 or less you will get a USB receiver that has to connect to a computer if you order 3 or more you get the gateway that plugs into your router

Great news! I just got an email from ThinkEco. They've rolled out the heating functionally, for those of you (eg Gozalim) who were lamenting.

+1
Have been using them as a remote control for a while now. Was obvious to lower it to the lowest temperature.
Now it is similar to this, but is a bit bulkier, and is free (and may have a better timer functionality. )

correction:
as per Play store update as well as some other emails there IS a heating mode! BUT:
it's only available with the Wifi Modlet
the nyc free program only provided the (similarly priced) Gateway modlets (which use the (more expensive) gateway )
if someone does figure out how to get the wifi modlet on the freeNYC plan - we'll have what to work with

Do not use space heaters with the
smartAC kit, modlet BN, or modlet

Yesterday, we sent you an email about how to use your smartAC kit this winter. However, we want to clarify and stress that we do not advocate or recommend that smartAC kits, modlet BNs, or modlets be used with space heaters.

Space heaters have a unique set of safety issues with respect to their use and may be restricted in certain NYC buildings. If you do choose to use one in your home, please follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety warnings associated with your space heater. For questions about the safe use of space heaters in your building, please also consult with your building manager. Do not plug space heaters into the smartAC kit, modlet BN, or modlet.
We would like to remind you that in general, you should not use extension cords with your heating or cooling units. You should also always turn off your space heaters before leaving your home or going to bed.

If you have any questions, please contact us at (800) 682-0152 or see the Heating Safety Tips outlined by the National Fire Protection Association.
