ConEd is running a program together with a company called ThinkEco called coolNYC. They are providing free units to NYC residents that plug in between your AC and outlet that act as a timer, thermostat, and energy monitor.

"During demand response for coolNYC, your window air conditioners will turn on and off at a slightly higher thermostat setting so that it's used less overall, but in a way that keeps your home sufficiently cool. You'll be notified a day ahead of any events, and you always have the choice to opt in or out, each time - opt outs can happen both before and during the event. Most summers, there is a need for just 2-4 demand response event."

You get to keep the modlet even after the summer is over its great for shabbos and yom roc you can set up the timer you can control your ac from wherever you are from the app or from the website portal it's only for nyc residents if you order 2 or less you will get a USB receiver that has to connect to a computer if you order 3 or more you get the gateway that plugs into your router

They were supposed to come to me tonight but called me to reschedule. Well see what it's like. I told them my router has no available ethernet ports so they said they'll bring me a free bridge!

Ha, that's awesome. They really do seem to try hard to get customers whatever they need to make it work. They must be well funded. I would've expected a completely free program to be busy turning people away due to a high volume of applicants, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The $25 amazon gc as a thank you for participating last summer was a very nice surprise.

They ask for it in the application and it's in the T&C.

Unless its all done thru a local network?

They just had a guy come install my modlets and program them. He was a young guy in college who is in their internship program. Whole thing was easy. He said they are pushing for in home install bc lots off ppl received the gear last yr but didn't bother to install. He went out special and bought me the bridge as well. He told me they had ten thousand units this year, but only about 30-40 employees there.
He gave me new modlets but left the same gateway. I didn't really need him bc it's quite simple to do, but I appreciate the free bridge.

I'm pretty sure I got an email saying they're doing that again this year - it's supposed to be for participating the high demand 'events' where you allow them to raise the temp a bit.

you don't need any internet access for it.

The ThinkEco modlet system does not need internet, it operates over either a USB dongle or your local network (the gateway option). However, most likely CoolNYC wants/requires you to have internet because part of the program is that they get all of this usage info, and potentially the ability to lower your usage in high demand times.

I just got the exact same. I don't think I have an available ethernet port. What do I do?
