Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I don't really know him or his skill set, most ppl try to connect with external USB and give up if data doesn't show up

Ok so once he checks if its picked up in the bios the next step is to determine what type of activity and feedback you feel from the drive, Meaning do you fell it spinning? clicking? not spinning? scraping? wierd mechanical/ electrical noise on a loop? and we can try to take it to the next step

Can someone recommend a 2.5inch IDE (which is what I think it is) to USB hard drive enclosure?

Preference given to amazon prime.

they're mostly pretty much the same. I've used vantec nexstar , startech and acomdata. -I was satisfied with all of those. I assume rosewill will be fine as well

Not sure this is the right place for this question:

When I boot up my Sony Z12 I've been getting the following error for the past few weeks (see attachment), the raid controller is an Intel ICH8M-e and the HDDs are Toshiba (apparently).

The config utility doesn't show me any details on the SMART event, and none of the software I've tried (e.g. HDD scan) can scan the drive. How can I diagnose this myself?

its difficult to diagnose because these machines run a striped raid on 2 SSD drives. Smart is a standardized monitoring tool for hard drives that's meant to detect irregularities etc and determine drive failure or imminent failure. SSD drives however don't really have standardized smart therefore anything don't like can trigger it. I will put up a utility you can use to test it tom....too tired.... To be continued
