Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Ok, I have a hard drive with 500gb on it, when I access it, it only shows a couple of files, but when I look at the available memory, it shows almost nothing. Where are my files?

Hi Robi,

Without checking the drive i would say one of two options.

1) Your Drive was infected and the files are hidden. Fix: Either Show all your hidden files in the folder options or use a unhide file utility.
2) Your Drive is failing and the data is corrupt. Fix: Depends if your adventurous and want to try recovering your data yourself. If you are there are a few options.

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

Something like this should do the job, I just wish I could find something like it (which is reasonably priced) from a reputable vendor, as I'm afraid to trust it with my data.

Asher - you can get something similar from newegg - its made by rosewill and they are a pretty good company. If you need something specific I will search later and send you one of the models I've used in the past. In general however only use these hard drive connectors if you don't have any issues with the hard drive. If your drive is acting up I don't recommend using these - even though they sometimes work - USB isn't the way to connect a bad drive. Most USB devices today run off a chip Chinese chip and that's not recommended when working in a bad or dying drive

Precisely why I stated I'm looking for a reputable brand, even for healthy drives. So you would or wouldn't recommend the Rosewill ones for reliability?
