Depends on how many countries you want to visit. I don't know what Super Flyer used but check eurail.com for an idea of the cost.

Formulas changed over the years.
I got one for passage through Italy, not allowed to touch Switzerland, but free throughout Italy, Slovenia, Greece and Turkey

Unfortunately...
However, low-cost which didn't really exist back then, could be really useful.

Yes, but express trains had a supplemental charge.
Also in Turkey first class was free (don't get excited).
