Author Topic: Maximum number of AMEX accounts (Read 19768 times)

I applied for the SPG reg+biz, and I got a call from an AMEX rep that they would like to approve the application, but they have a policy limiting number of revolving credit accounts, so she wanted to know if I could choose an older account to close. And that is what I did.

But, I thought it was weird and very CHASE-like, not AMEX-like. Especially as I have had way more simultaneous accounts with AMEX in the past, I once had 6 regs and 6 biz at the same time, and now it was just an application for 1 reg+biz with 2 existing reg+biz.

Anyone heard of this "policy" before?

Does this "policy" apply just to credit cards, or also to charge cards?

I think she said that this was a "new" policy, although I don't remember for sure.

Just as a datapoint:

I have 3 Personal, 2 for 1 business, 1 for another business, and 1 for a 3rd business.

I was FR'd a couple years ago, but have been successful in applying for additional cards.

It was me who reported the same thing a few days ago (although Amex didn't contact me, I was declined and I called the number on the letter notifying me of the decline -- which was the number to "new accounts" and not "reconsideration").

My story is very similar to yours. I previously had many more AMEX accounts open at the same time, but they asked me to close a revolving credit card and then I was approved (about 36 hours later) for the card. They notified me that they would be running another credit check though (uggh).

My spouse just went through the whole exact process today.
According to the rep, this is a new policy for new applications, to limit the amount of revolving credit lines to four per person.
I thought this was a bit strange, as the current four accounts, two were Reg and two were Biz.
If this is correct, then she is basically saying that from now on AMEX will be enforcing a four account maximum on combined personal and business accounts.

my father applied a few days ago for the spg card Amex called him today and said that there is a limit of 4 cards that you could have combined biz. and personal so he asked them if they could maybe close the gold card they said that they only count credit cards not charge cards he needs to close a credit card in order to be approved for the spg

According to the rep, this policy affects new applications, not existing accounts.

This is consistent with what I was told as well. My SPG Biz app would have been credit card No. 5 (even though I've had more open in the past). I had to cancel a Blue card to get approved. The Gold Biz charge card was instantly approved though.

NEW AMEX POLICY?

I recently applied for 2 Amex cards (2bm), first one (Hilton H.) was instantly approved. Re. the 2nd one (Blue Cash), I was given a phone number to call, with a tracking #. I called, and was told that due to multiple applications, they're concerned about duplicate applications (or something like that) and therefore the new application which is pending is placed on a temporary hold for 4 days.

I called back ~4 days later, my good [Indian] CSR tells me he'll see what he can do, after sitting on hold for 10 minutes, he returned to tell me that I've already reached the maximum number of (4) Amex cards one is allowed to have at once, so in order to approve a new card he asked me if I want to cancel one of my cards, which I then proceeded to do successfully (after a 25 minute hold

)...

Incidentally, it seems I'm not the only one who was recently told about this 4 card maximum, and today another blogger (paddyinba) is reporting the same story.

Anyone else recently did recon. over the past few days?

for the heck of it i ordered one card (addn user) just to see if they would say anything.. i have 4 personal 4 bizz
no problem! however when i asked to extend line of credit they took off from one but added to the other

just got this denial 5 min after I applied...
"Thank you for applying for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card. We value your membership and appreciate your interest in another American Express Card. Unfortunately, we cannot approve your application at this time. According to our records, you currently have the maximum number and type of American Express Card accounts that we allow..."
