Can you share your experience travelling with a lulav?
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:25:43 PM »
Please share your experience travelling by air with a lulav on or before Succos.
Did you pack it in a checked bag? Package it by itself as a checked bag?
Did you carry it on with you? In a hard case or plastic bag?
Did you get any interference from the TSA or the airline?

I need to be prepared and would appreciate your input.

I've taken one with me before as a carry on and a different time in my checked bag. Never had a problem either time. Last year, I was going to Birmingham, AL for simchas torah and I didn't want to get a ton of questions about it so I chose to throw it in my suitcase, in the thin plastic case thing that it came in when I got it. Just make sure, if you check it, to have a suitcase that is big/long enough for it, unless you want a curved lulav...

ya. It was in the soft plastic cases but they made me take it out. If you fly with a Lulav make sure to take the hard plastic cases.

My father used to travel yearly on Chol Hamoed Sukkos and he always took a Lulav and Esrog with him on board, sometimes he would take a full size Lulav but more recently he would have the Lulav cut off the bottom to the minimum size as well as the Hadasim and Arovos, and then he would put it in a post tube and then he'd barely have any problems, it was actually kind of cute to have such a small Lulav!

just flew with a lulav as a carry on, had it packed in a box with a stick taped on to it so that i can hold it in any direction.
no issues with the TSA, when i got onto the plane i asked the flight attendants to put it away in the front, they asked me what it was and when i told them what it was they were trying to figure out why in the world i was carrying a palm branch with me..
