Experiences Reallocating Credit Lines
« on: April 18, 2010, 01:49:06 AM »
Can everyone please post their experiences when trying to reallocate credit lines. This is obviously needed before closing cards in order to not hurt your credit score. Since the new laws came out it has been quite hard. Dan has said many times that if you find the right supervisor they will do it. I tried Chase and AMEX a few times with no luck. What has happened with you guys with:

Chase
AMEX
Citi
?

Are there certain phone numbers that work better?

Ive had a few on my lines cut.So I dont know if its that good of an idea to keep very high limits, as they may then ask for proof for justification for having such a high limit.

I understand whats the difference if say I have 3 @ $25k or 1 @ $75k, for some reason it does. When out of the Country this past week they went on a spree when it came to my accts, and no I cant complain since most everything was made up.Guess I should be happy they simply didnt Close them up

When is the last time you tried it? Are you talking about US based banks and US cards?

In the past, besides reallocating the credit lines and closing the card, I have also simply downgraded the card to a no annual fee card. Are people still able to do that and if so, with which card and which banks?

The obvious drawback to this approach is that you will retain many open cards with the same bank which can possible prevent you from being approved by that bank in the future for additional cards.

Yes, but from what I hear Europe offers are horrible compared to US offers. I read that BA was offering like 5k to UK citizens and 100k to US citizens. In Israel, you need to pay them for a credit card. And it's actually more like a debit card. USA is very generous!!

this true, I can proudly say that if I'd live in the USA the economy would suffer...    ;-)

Older topic, but thought id chime in on this.

I just got approved for another amex card and in the email they sent me it said:

"Included in your Welcome Package is the credit limit on your new card. When we assigned the credit limit on your new card we considered the credit limit on your existing American Express cards.   If you would like to adjust the distribution of your credit limits between your cards, please call the number on the back of your card once you have received your card. One of our representatives will be happy to help you."

That seems to indicate that they should have no problem doing it, right? Is it bad to adjust my credit lines so most of them have like 1 or 2k and my main one has the rest?

Rarely anybody but AMEX will ask for justification proof.

Just as a side note:
If you're ever speaking to a CC rep. and they ask you if you want to "update your information" (basically they will ask if your current income is different than what you submitted in you application, or even if its the same, it might not qualify for the same that it did when you applied) say "No thank you". They are trying to find ways to cut peoples credit limits.

When out of the Country this past week they went on a spree when it came to my accts, and no I cant complain since most everything was made up.Guess I should be happy they simply didnt Close them up

What exactly happenned??

Is there any update on this? Maybe a wiki is in order?

Other than Chase (which is quite straightforward) and AMEX (which is also straightforward to an extent), which other banks will allow credit line shifts between open cards? Which will allow shifts between personal and business?

I've tried BofA to shift from personal to business and they said no-go. I am now wondering if I should even try between two personal accounts (I have an old one with a very low APR and a relatively large CL, which I don't need at this point as I would rather earn cash back than have low APR loans. Would love to shift CL to newly opened unlimited rewards card).

Same question goes for Citi, I would like to shift CL from my Premier Card to Double Cash (and possibly from AAdvantage Platinum Select to Double Cash). Is there a point in trying? I've seen various reports saying not possible, while others say it is possible but will involve a hard pull.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!
