« Reply #181 on: March 11, 2015, 03:56:16 PM »
If someone is looking for a camera there is a deal going on: (Link to information page)

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 - $100 off ($50 Visa Card + $50 Discount after code: RXTRADEUP50)
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II - $100 off ($50 Visa Card + $50 Discount after code: RXTRADEUP50)
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III - $100 off ($50 Visa Card + $50 Discount after code: RXTRADEUP50)
Sony Cyber-shot  RX10B - $150 off ($50 Visa Card + $100 Discount after code: RXTRADEUP100)

Seems like the only catch is: "Use the return shipping label that was included in your package to send us your old Smartphone, Camera or Camcorder"

I'm looking to upgrade cameras. I had a Canon PowerShot Elph 130, and  I want something a bit more "professional" but still user friendly. I would probably spend around 200. Any thoughts?

Refurbished Sony a5000 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm lens, 55-210mm lens, and 16GB SD card for $379!

This is factory refurbished and comes with a 90-day warranty. As long as you are okay with that (and personally I am), this is an amazing deal.

Good deal?

Sony DSC-HX50V/B Cyber-shot 20.4 MP Digital Camera with Case + $20 Focus Gift Card

Was: $448.00
Now: $229.99

Compare:
Amazon - $349.00
Best Buy - $369.99

Pretty good deal.

But for that price I'd definitely go for this instead:

Sony a3000 Mirrorless camera, 18-55mm lens, plus Adobe Photoshop and Premier Elements 12 for $249.

The a3000 is a mirrorless camera in an DSLR-type body, meaning it has a large comfortable grip and an electronic viewfinder. This is Sony’s low-end mirrorless model, but the image quality will blow any point and shoot clear out of the water. Of course you have the same focusing speed and other benefits of all the other mirrorless cameras; the significant difference here is the form factor.

The camera and lens sell for $278 on Amazon, and the Photoshop/Premiere bundle is an additional $80.

The software sells on Ebay for around $60, so if you want you could flip it right away and bring the cost of the camera and lens down to an effective $190. That’s an amazing steal.

Of course the HX50 has a 30x zoom and is far smaller; they're very different types of camera. But from a pure image quality standpoint the a3000 wins hands down.

It's basically a convenience vs. quality decision.

ETA: I just noticed that this a3000 deal is over. IIRC there's another version of it still available; I'll post a link in a few.

Can you explain in more detail what benefits the viewfinder has in either picture taking or picture quality. Its definitely a savings, however just want to know what the benefits are. Thanks.

Two main points:

You could actually see what you're shooting outside in bright sunlight (as you won't have to deal with a washed out screen), and since the camera is pressed up you your face it'll be steadier, leading to fewer blurry pictures.

Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

How does the Nex-5tl compare with the a5000 or 5100?

Anybody hear of americacameras.com?
They have the a5000 for $284.95 with promo code 5off here.
Just not sure if it is a trustworthy site.
And they don't take AMEX!

Figured it was a scam.

In the meantime I ordered the Nex-5 deal you posted yesterday but I'm debating whether it would be advisable to hold out for a deal on the a5000 (from a reliable seller).

The Sony a6000 is starting to be discontinued in some international markets (Australia for example).

We should hopefully be seeing some food deals on this in the coming weeks.

I am looking to buy a new camera. I really enjoy taking pictures (mostly just of the family - indoors and outdoors) but I need a camera that will fit in my pocket (although I don't mind if it's a bulky fit). My price range is 2-3 hundred or so. I enjoy playing around with different settings but most of all I want the camera to take great pics on the basic setting (so I can catch quick pics before the kids run away). I was thinking about the Nex series (based on reading your recommendations), should I consider the a6000 instead? Thanks for your input!

The a-series (a6000) is the replacement for the NEX.
