Setup a repeater.

Put DD-WRT onto any compatible router.

Set up a 2nd router that is configured to work as a repeater. Not all routers have an option to be configured as a repeater, however you are able to install (flash) a firmware called DD-WRT onto most routers that has many features including repeater

I never pay for Internet. Mooch off the neighbor. Was a little weak so I bought a Linksys Wifi Extender at Staples for $79 IIRC. Worked awesome throughout 2 floor house

Thoughts on this? Mentions that I just push a button on my modem/router but I don't see a button.

Sorry to revive an old thread if this has been discussed elsewhere..I am looking to extend an open network that spills into my house so I don't have to pay for internet. If I get an extender such as this one https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wi-Fi-Range-Extender-TL-WA850RE/dp/B00E98O7GC will I have to have access to the router to pair the extender to it?

It is not straight forward and doesn't always work. (besides the point that it is only possible if you register it permanently on the account because there's no way top get the login page on this device.)

I don't mind registering it as a device on the account. Mind linking to basic instructions?

The instructions I was a bit confused, I was mixing it up with using a router for the purpose of a repeater, and for that, there's this guide http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/747884-How-to-use-an-Optimum-WiFi-hot-spot-with-multiple-computers

As for these simple extenders, I cannot tell you why it is that way. But I experienced it myself as well as heard from more than one person that did not have success in getting them to connect or to share the internet from the open Optimum.

(if the need is for a PC, I'd suggest buying a long range Wi-Fi antenna for your PC. Something like this.)
Thanks, that long range antenna for pc will work for me.
