Was in Moscow and sorounding area 3 times for a month each in a camp and took the overnight train one year to St. Petersburg and stayed in the lubavitch dorms beautiful cities!! Don't look to much like s tourist and stay away from the police ESP. In the airport as they once stopped me and pulled me aside and said my passport is fake and many "ploblems" unless my friend and I give them 400$ each.... Long story just stay away and make sure your visa is good untill after the day you leave cuz my travel agent messed up my visa and it expired day before I left and I almost didn't get out ( had to find the airport embassy and convince them with money of course to give me visa extension and just made my plane!)
but shermetavo airport is very nice go to the shuk there as well as red square cremlin..Rabbi goldschmidt shul is very nice and there's a kosher restar. In it.
P.S Good luck it's not simple to get around as Russian non Jews despise English speaking ppl

Any travel agent dealing with Russia can help with invitation... I know in NY, but not sure about Israel.

Important to note, if you plan to stay in the same city for 3 days or more you will need to register with the police. IF you don't they can make problems for you when you leave.. (normally not a problem if you're traveling as you're never in the same city for too long.)

Visas can take from 3 - 20 days, different prices... I would recommend going through a travel agency as oppose to going to the consulate yourself. Call any travel agent dealing with Russia they'll do it for you.

Yup the Alter Rebbe was locked up in Petersburg, there is a museum where the jail once stood with a wax figure of the alter rebbe (which doesn't really resemble him...) it's on an island if im not mistaken.. (or atleast you have to take a boat there)

Good luck and enjoy your stay... where are you staying? Moscow has a few restaurants, but I hear the restaurant in Bolshaya Bronaya (which is more centrally located to the kremlin if I remember correctly, it's in a shul) is suppose to be very good.. it's a kavkazi restaurant, you probably haven't tried that yet.
