worth the extra $15/day over the subway to save an extra 1-2 hrs. total per day, plus the subway noises, smells, hassles, transfers, and risks of a lady being harassed, etc... Rush hour has no seats, sometimes, so it's not even relaxing.
It would be more than $5 to take mass transit- lirr + 2 transfers.

Yeah but still for us out of towners these expenses are literally incomprehensible. $20/day if you work only 200 days/year is still 4K after tax, which in NYC with a high tax rate means you have to earn 7k/year pre-tax JUST to PARK for for your work...I bet Dan's annual mortgage In Cleveland isn't 7k! 😋

However, the price difference over the train is only $10 or less per day. Plus she gains 1-2 more hours of work during that time, so she earns more than she loses. Plus, menuchas hanefesh of some silence instead of subway noise, and quality of life have value, as well...

she easily makes 7k more bc she works in Manhattan. Not sure what she would make in Denver but I know compared to other citys they pay about 40% more in nyc.
Also, my effective tax rate is nowhere close to 40%.
Lastly, they have commuter funds that are pre tax.

Maybe you are right about some salaries but if you are a medical professional for example, you make more outside of hyper-competitive markets like LA or NY.  I'm not saying she shouldn't drive and park.  I used to live that kind of life in LA.  We may be unique in that we have businesses that can make the same or more where we currently live and literally almost every single thing except for some kosher food products are cheaper: gas, car insurance, property tax, state tax, school tuition, housing, costs of commuting (in money and time).  Maybe some jobs make 40% more but plenty of jobs aren't and your costs are so much less so that you can actually accumulate wealth and have more time with your family.

Lets get one thing clear, I'm not living in ny because my wifes salary is higher here. However, she is a medical processional and as far as I know salaries for her profession are far greater in nyc than else where - cmiiw.

compared to subway and lirr prob less than $15/day difference. Plus 1-2 hrs working time instead of traveling, can make $70-$100 more per day.

I didn't say it was $40 more. I said it was probably total cost $40
Compared to my 18 minute commute which probably cost me $4 in gas

may as well consider cost of owning car as well in both instances. anther plus of a good public commute is u only need one car for the family (less lease/insurance costs).

A major criterion for me is public transportation accessibility.

I would argue that a good 30 minute (no change) public transportation commute is better than a 15 minute drive. A friend who happens to work in a midtown prestigious law firm and saw me on Shabbos being מעביר סדרה in shul commented to me how lucky he is that he rides the train to midtown every day, so he can accomplish a lot of learning during the train rides there and back.

When did it become prestigious to be one's own בעל עגלה?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Public transportation is not cheaper than a 15 min ride with no tolls.
You can listen to a shiur, etc. It's not like we're talking about an hour drive. You should all really try a short commute. It's really something else.

As long as you have free/easy parking, then of course you're better off driving up to 15 minutes. How is this even an argument?
