I don't get the circles in the one you posted. They appear to be of different sizes, which would indicate relative populations, but that can't be right, just going by NYC compared to anywhere else.

Seems appropriate for this thread.

American Jews by county (2011):

https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/8giuxb/american_jews_by_county_2011_6900x4275/
Some of these seem odd. Two are pointed out in that thread (Clay County, GA and Ozaukee County, WI). But there's also the two >=7.5% counties in CA (I'm ignoring the third, which is SF), and the two non-Denver counties in CO (Boulder and Pitkin, which is Aspen).

Crazy that there are Jews in CA, I know.

Would be interesting to see % of Jews by state rather than county. I would guess that NJ and FL would rank at the top.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Don't be a wise guy. There's no way you (or any other frum Californian) would guess correctly if asked what are the 3 counties in CA with the highest percentage of Jews. Alpine? Marin? Really? I await your explanation with bated breath.

Marin County is one of the wealthiest in the US, and in the bay area. Where the wealthy VC guys live, and the heads of the startups that made it.also a small, not so populous County, so percentages aren't as meaningful.
Alpine County has 1167 people total. Not hard to get a high percentage.

I probably wouldn't have guessed it, but I seeing Marin county there my thought was basically "yeah, that makes sense."

There are plenty of counties with smaller populations, and none of them even hit the 2.5% mark, let alone the >=7.5% that Alpine is showing. As far as Marin county, I wasn't surprised that it shows up on the list, just that it was in the highest category. Also, I wouldn't call a quarter of a million people 'not so populous'. Like I said, if you'd have been asked this question before, you'd never have guessed these 2.

I knew CA would for sure be #2 in Jewish population, but I was definitely surprised to see the SF area be such a big part of that. One table I just saw had LA area at less than double SF area.

Bottom line is that barring mistakes in their underlying data, or in converting the data into a map, all the 'anomalies' are going to be explained by relative population size. Doesn't make some of it any less surprising.

It still translates to a total of 82 Jews. That can't be considered very surprising.

Let me phrase it differently. If I told you that Marin County has the highest percentage of Jews of any US county not on the east coast, you'd say 'yeah that makes sense'?

Like I said, there are plenty of small counties in this country, where it doesn't take many Jews to make that map. Every other county that shows up on that map can be explained with a major city. So yes, it's surprising to me.

If anyone wants to see what was apparently the underlying data (for totals, not as a percentage), here's a link to the Excel file:
http://www.jewishdatabank.org/Studies/downloadFile.cfm?FileID=3511

There's another data set I found from Brandeis, but you have to register first. I'll try to figure out a way to embed that one.

Yes it will be surprising but then when you look into the numbers and see that it can all be due to one or two extended families it becomes an "okay"

I don't know.
Presenting it in that way, as a standalone fact, is very different than what we're dealing with here. My initial reaction might be surprise but thinking about it a bit it makes perfect sense.

Here by looking at map and seeing the whole picture it all makes sense right away.

I'll just point out that the base data is far from authoritative. There are plenty of other estimates out there, and they don't all agree on some of these quirkier results.

I took a quick look at this, and it seems a lot of this data is not up to date.

ETA: For example, Monmouth County, NJ is over 20 years old, there's no way it's even remotely accurate today, the numbers I've heard are triple what they have them at.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

It's a interesting little snapshot, but like I said, don't expect it to be too accurate. Also, it seems like the Reddit poster did their own mapping, but in the report from the data bank, right under the map yesitsme posted, they did their own version, one that looks less striking because of the percentage ranges they chose.
