.50 is a mounted machine gun (the incredibly strong recoil makes it virtually impossible to hold one with bare hands). The robots seem to have some kind of rifle-style weapon "retrofitted" into the arm. Makes more sense it's a shottie.

There are .50 cal handguns. But shotgun also makes sense for the application

That depends on the kind of .50, there are several different versions...
