I've used them quite often, just make sure you're as protected as you can be, PayPal, Amex etc.. I've used them for Fontainebleau reservations, I only pay thru PayPal after I get a confirmation from the hotel

My fam has used them a bunch of times- its all based on the owner.  We have had MANY great experiences.  Only one place we stayed at was falsely advertised- posted as 5 BR but was 4 BR, but was BEAUTIFUL house, priv entrance to the beach- so I can not complain

I've used the site several times to rent family vacation houses.  Basically a "Craig's List" type experience, pay attention to details and realize everything is negotiable.

I'm currently looking at a suite/apartment at a ski lodge operated by the ski resort which happens to have some private ownership (reminiscent of what I've seen in some Israeli hotels) the price seems quite reasonable compared with other hotels 15-20 min away but less than half of what the resort charges in the same building u think it's still negotiable?

You never can tell.  The owner probably has an annual maintenance fee he needs to cover and just needs to get it booked and break even for the year.  If you're looking in CO there isn't much snow yet this year and bookings are down.  Never hurts to make a "reasonable" offer via email to test the waters.

Gotta say, I was looking at some properties and for the combo of the cost and options, it often has hotels beat.
Especially in Thailand. They have some stunning properties there.

I've used these sites many times (US only) and always had a good experience. Rentals are often listed on more than one of these sites (VRBO, Vacation Rentals, Home Away, sometimes even Trip Advisor) so you can compare reviews from different sources. Sometimes the prices are different too, so you can save some money with a bit of research.

Something I find you have to be careful of on these sites are rentals that are listed as private but are actually only semi-private (for example a main house and a guest cottage which are rented out separately).

Worth it?

I negotiated someone down from 460 to 350 but now he wants me to send him checks instead of paying through vrbo system and im a little hesitant. Seems like a legit guy and only had good reviews though. Thoughts?

Try offering to pay 3% more to cover his cc fees.

In any case if he seems legit I wouldn't worry about sending a check. Make sure to Google the place - generally people list their places on more websites too, so you could see even more reviews.

He's probably more concerned with having to pay VRBO than the credit card fee.  Either way, I've used airbnb (same idea), and have only had positive experiences.

Is anyone familiar with a vrbo type of place within walking distance of of Shabbos minyan, in tristate area? alternatively, is there a way to search within certain radius of miles?

Their map view is good for searching an area. Not a radius, but pretty good nonetheless.
