Fedex or UPS will not give you good rates on ground shipping if you do not ship a lot

(For international Shipping there are ways to get cheaper even with not shipping often.)

You could create a Fedex account, I have a way to add a discount to your account that will basically be
10%-13% off 1-10 lbs
20% off 11+ lbs

If you bill your Fedex Shipments to a Amex Gold Business card, you will get an additional 5% Open savings, + 2x points

In truth, the savings aren't that much on 1-10 lbs boxes. Even with 15-20% savings its only $1-2 per package.

What weight boxes will you be shipping?

I am assuming the shipments are 1-2 lbs

On 1-2 Lbs shipments there is very little discount avail. As per say, the base rate for Zone 2 (150 mile shipment) is $5.84 + Gas surchage of 8%.

The rate never could be discounted below the base rate. (Unless you are doing really high qty shipping and have negotiated rates)

Keep in mind with Fedex, there is a $2.85 Home Delivery Surcharge. Plus they have a whole list of other surcharges, that could be applicable.

That doesnt look to bad. When I looked at the rates on fedex using a .5lbs going from lkwd to flatbush it was giving me over $20.

Interesting. Does UPS also qualify for this? Is there a cap on the 5% Open savings?

No

With open no limit on 5%, I think there is a cap on the 2x points

And per http://www.fedex.com/us/open-savings/faq.html I can stack this on top of my negotiated rates.

I've only been doing about 15% of my shipping via Fedex, but that number's about to go up. Thanks Name Changed.

Yes you could stack it!

Between 5% and 2x points that like an additional 8% discount.

But what is sweet about the Open savings, its 5% of the shipment cost including surcharges, and insurance!
(Fedex standard discount is only on the base rate)

Scratch that. Per the link I just posted:

Are there any other limits or restrictions that apply?
Yes, the OPEN Savings® discount per American Express OPEN Business Card account has a combined savings cap of $3,000 broken down as follows:
Maximum annual discount of $1,000 for FedEx Express® and FedEx Ground® shipments
Maximum annual discount of $1,000 for FedEx Freight® shipments
Maximum annual discount of $1,000 for FedEx Office® purchases

$1000 won't go very far for me.

Some companies that have good rates can "invite" you to particpate in their rates.  Its legit, I have done it for years.

for good fedex rates buy it thru usaa.com (u need to signup)
Rates with USAA aren't that good for ground

I could get you better rates than what USAA is offering on Ground.

USAA has 40% off Express, but you could call Fedex Great Rates and get 55% off Express on shipments over 11lbs

Or go thru a Reseller (I get 65% off Express)
