but I mostly ship ground
Most of the shipments they got me refunded were ground. 32 of the 47 were billed as residential when they were in fact commercial. Not a full refund (apologize for misrepresenting earlier), but savings nonetheless.

Amen. It already did by $1K, thanks to you.

FYI, you know all these companies that claim to recover monies lost on your UPS bill? I always ignored their constant cold calls and booths at shows, but recently I caved and decided to try it out, and I could not have been happier so far. They found 47 shipments on my most recent statement that they got fully refunded, some for the stupidest reasons (one next day air shipment was delivered at 10:32AM instead of 10:30 = full refund). They take 50% of monies recovered (industry standard it seems, but I do plan on negotiating now that I see how much money it is). There's tons of these companies, PM me if you want contact info.
some of that stuff could be done with the right software, which I assume is how these companies work

Great thread and good info. I just switched 80% of our shipping to USPS. We ship about 2k a month but almost everything under 1lb. We are saving almost half over going with the small packages with UPS.

If it fits it ships. USPS is unbeatable for small stuff.

I have had this problem with FedEx too.

The refunds go to your UPS account,  correct?  (Just wondering how you know that they didn't get credit for more packages than what they told you about.)

A $10 hour salary is close to $20k a year
Which means to make it worth it for him to bring in-house he would need to be getting back $40k from his claims.

$40k is only 4% of what his annual shipping charges are,  so sounds like it shouldn't be hard to hit that number.  Although, I have no idea what the "mistakes" stats are.

@Shmelly, you mind sharing the percentage ratio?

I have had this problem with FedEx too.
They told me that FedEx only adjusts commercial to residential (to charge you more), and not vice versa (to refund you for your mistake). You're best off just setting your default as commercial and then they'll adjust it to the more expensive residential when needed. That's just me thinking out loud, I have not actually tried that.

Correct. I then cut this company a check for 50% of the monies recovered. UPS did not actually shell out a refund.

About 1-2%.

20k a week? Meaning $1M/year? In shipping charges? May I ask what business you're in?
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

I have 40lb (a suitcase worth) of items to send from NY 11415 to CA 90036

UPS rates were $62 for 40lb or $34 for 20lb (if i cant find a big enough box to fit all 40lb into).

USPS rates are $44 for 40lb or $35 for 20lb

Does anyone have a cheaper option?

Or anyone with a business account with ups who can generate me a shipping label at their discounted rate?

Thanks

I get $33 for Fedex Ground, but home delivery will add about $3

And it could really be heavier than 40lbs if the dimensional weight is heavier

With my UPS account $23.45 for 20lb or $38.18 for 40 pounds.

USPS no longer offers parcel post. If its not media mail, the next option is priority mail. (unless its under 16 ounces)

I recently had to ship a 3LB package from NJ to Ill. Cheapest rate was $7.50 with priority mail regional box A  :o

Is there a cheaper way to ship that size/(weight) package?

If it fits it ships. USPS is unbeatable for small stuff.

If you are a large shipper for lighter items (1 oz-15 lbs) as well, you may want to look into DHL Global Mail

They work with USPS but rates are lower than first class/priority mail, (if you ship alot, than MUCH lower)

they offer both ground (2-8) business days and expedited (2-5) business days

You did notice the amounts I'm doing with UPS? I'm not a small customer, they treat me very well. My rep sends me gifts all the time, calls me just to shmooze, anything to keep me in bed with him and not Fedex.

Well heres some advice. I have done this for my home based business and worked like a charm. Next time you speak to your rep, 'mention' that only some of you shipments go to UPS while the rest go to Fedex. Yup, i got 40% (thats forty percent) cheaper rate.

(Yes, my rep calls me every couple months to know where the extra shipments are. Figure it out. However, they NEVER even threatened to move me up to the higher rate).  8)
