Program has been around for a little while. They claim that it is for items they otherwise couldn't have sold because of shipping costs. It is annoying, however I find I order from Amazon often enough, I j just add it to my cart and wait till i have something else to order
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

I was also annoyed to see that even with my prime account. What I do when I need such an item (if the price is worth it) order a item with this as its addon and then right away cancel that extra item. It still ships.
It is all from Hashem and he will continue to give!

As an Amazon seller, many of my items priced at $4.25 recently became Add-on items. This completely destroyed my sales. I raised the prices to $5 and then to $5.01, and they stayed as Add-on items. However, changing the price to $5.05 reverted them all back to being regular Prime items. Just a heads-up to any FBA sellers.

This always works?

Does the add-on work-around of adding and item, then immediately cancelling still work?  Just tried, but had no luck.  Any other way to get around it?

Don't have the link but on the main site there was. Add a pre-order item, cancel the pre order item the next day

Sorry for the revival of an old thread.

Is the add-on trick something that Amazon shuts accounts down for? If so, how often can you take advantage of it before they catch on/care?
Dan promotes using this trick on DDMS so I would assume its relatively safe.

No one knows why Amazon shuts an account, usually for too many returns.

But have people had experience of getting in trouble for abusing the add on trick (order a preorder item and then cancel)?
And what would be considered abuse?

I tried this for the first time last week and am having trouble! Now that my add-on has arrived I want to cancel the pre-order item. However, Amazon won't let me cancel the pre-order without canceling the add-on ("Important Message. To cancel these items, the Add-on Items in your order must also be cancelled."), and the add-on is no longer "cancel-able" because its been shipped and delivered and no longer appears in the order summary page!

Anyone have experience with this?

Just chatted CS and he removed it. No issues and no questions asked :)
