Traveling With Children: Car Seats-Rental Cars-Taxis
« on: February 05, 2013, 08:28:29 PM »
What do people do when traveling with kids, either renting cars or taking taxis without a car seat?

For example, I'm going to Miami for Pesach. I have a car seat at my destination, if I rent a car at the airport what do I do with my kid? Is it legal to have my wife hold her in the back? If I take a cab, they don't usually have car seats. What do people do?

I want to avoid shlepping a car seat through airports at all costs.

To/from airport-I would do without car seats, but i think it is illegal.
Cabs are legal without car seats

In terms of legality or safety?
Liveries, taxis, and public transportation buses are exempt from the occupant restraint law. However, children under the age of four must be restrained in a federally approved car seat while riding on a school bus [Section 1229-c(9), NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law]

Im looking to rent a car in Italy with a car seat for my two year old, and the prices are ludicrous! They are costing 3x the cost of the actual rental. Anyone know where to get a normal price on car seats??

I just did it. Didn't think it was too bad. Strapped it to a carriage in the airport, gate checked the carriage, and the toddler sat in the car seat on the flight and behaved much better than if he would be in a regular seat.

We did it last week. Two kids just turned 2 and 4. Took car seat for younger one. Was very easy. Used carriage in airport. Had to take child out of carseat when going through security and put carriage and car seat on the belt. Put child back in and car seat back on carriage until entrance of the plane. Then detached car seat, checked carriage, carried child while seated in car seat until his seat.

Which seat/stroller do you have? I haven't found a "snap-and-go" for bigger than an infant.

I used a Mountain Buggy Nano. The car seat is a cheap, big Cosco car seat (It happens to be pretty light) for toddlers. The carriage comes with a strap to use with car seats similar to car seatbelts.

Does the car seat fit in well, or does it shift around due to it not being designed for that?

It just lays on top of it and is held in place by the strap. The same way it is held in place in a car when you don't use a base or anchors, but rather the lap belt.

Get one of these or a similar one that works with your carseat.

Best travel investment I ever made. Stroller gets checked at checkin with luggage and car seat comes on the plane

Thanks, but I'm not looking for an airport solution. I'm looking for what's essentially a snap and go for a toddler for when traveling and using taxis and not a rental car. If we want to go out on a day trip and use a taxi, I need to be able to shlep the car seat around once we get to our destination.

Do a Google image search for "toddler car seat stroller."  There are a few options, including one with fairly large wheels, good for more than just moving a car seat through the airport.
