Bali Master Thread
« on: February 19, 2013, 03:54:26 PM »
Seeing as I just booked my tix back from DPS - HKG - TLV on CX and LY for 30k in J, I figured it made sense to start a  master thread to see what type of Bali knowledge is lurking around here.

Anyone raising their hand?

Going in mid-December, although it seems that it's part of the rainy season.

Due to the HH devaluation, it looks like I'll be staying at the Conrad.

Sounds great. I am working on a trip there for this coming up summer. I would like to spend some time in Ubud also as it is supposed to be a very cool place, with lots of rice paddies etc. with great rental villas. How much time are you looking to spend in Bali?

It's coming on the tail end of a 9 day (or so) Thailand trip, so it'll be 4 or 5 nights, including shabbos.
I booked for 5 nights to maximize the HH discount, so the room cost 28k per night, vs. a published cost of around $220.
Not the greatest value, but better that than paying cash out of pocket.

Although I will say, some of the hostels and rental units looked very nice, and quite cheap as well.

I have Hilton points as well as SPG points but I plan on booking private villas with kitchens and pools for cheaper then the hotels. Airbnb is a great resource. We are planning on going to Tulamben which is in north eastern Bali for a few days. They have amazing underwater wrecks and you can get a scuba license in 3 days for 350 USD with a private instructor. Then I want to spend Thurs to Sunday in Ubud where I think it will be nice for Shabbos. Then Sunday to Tuesday in Seminiyak or Nusa Dua, still not sure.
On the way there we plan on spending Shabbos in Singapore, and booking a cheap ticket from Sin to DPS.
Getting home is the hard part, I may fly DPS to BKK for the 86 dollar tickets, spend a day there and fly home thru Europe. I will probably use UA miles for one ticket and AC for the others.
Wonder if AC allows an open jaw plus a stopover.

As the time gets a bit closer, I'll have to ask you for advice on activities, although since I'm going w/ 3 little 'uns, I'll be more limited.
And I agree with the AirBnb and other sites like it. It's just that if I don't burn the HH now, I may not have a chance in the future at a decent rate.

With 3 little ones I would think Bali is the perfect place! You got me thinking about booking the Conrad, although if anything I will just book the Hilton singapore. I am not yet booked although I should have this wrapped up within a few weeks.

They're closing the Bali Hyatt from August till January for extensive renovations per FT.
Hotel seems to be a great value at a Cat 1, but maybe it'll increase after the work.

I gotta pipe in to this thread: I'm going to be in Bali mid-late december. Also have the conrad booked for a few nights to get rid of my hilton points before they become even more worthless. In regards to the rainy season: it may be worth it depending on the weather to go to neighboring lombok island (right next door...3 hour high speed boat ride) where people say the weather is slightly less rainy. It is also less well developed over there (all i could find points wise was a sheraton spg). But I am going to assume that it will be nice since it only supposedly rains a few hours a day and thats only in the late afternoon. Il be going CX F and returning through BKK on ElAL. I look forward to hearing reviews from people who go before me. Anybody going to be on my flights?

Please pipe in, there's a dearth of Bali knowledge here.  :)
I'm there in mid December as well, so let's do a DO there.
I'm routing back in biz class through HKG in CX and LY.

Let's keep in touch.

Thinking about canceling the Conrad stay since it's not such a 'steal', and I figure that there are tons of resorts always offering deals, and the Conrad never had rave reviews.

Anyone ever use http://www.baligetaway.com.au/hotels-villas-bali?

Yeah that is why I did not book the Conrad myself. Website does have some nice looking properties, although never heard of it.

The IC Bali has prices starting at around $115 per night w/ very good TA reviews.
Anyone ever stay there?

Thanks! After finding EWR - PEK in J open the day after t bav I just could not pass it up.

Depends on how you look at it. I see it as 9 days with a nanny for my baby for 350 dollars, a nice amount of time to get my scuba license, a happy wife and still 2 days in BKK and 3 in SIN and one in PEK :) There is a lot to do there we are moving to 3 different places in order to get it all in.

Supposed to be lots to do in Bali. Both inland and beachside.
